Well it's nearly the end of the year... I think it was very early in 2009 that I began writing this blog...
What was most important for me this year.. without a doubt the events of this past August...my best friend and spouse and I celebrated 40 years of marriage. We really enjoyed celebrating it with friends in both Regina and Ottawa.
We also waited for and enjoyed the very recent news of the arrival of our fourth grandson.
(Friends of ours will receive a more personal account of our year in a few days)
The country of ours...well...somehow we did not have a federal election. Though I would not have minded one (it is the 'highest expression' of a democracy), I am glad one did not occur. Our electorate is quite polarized and I don't really know how an election would have turned out.
Some things I liked about the year in our political life in Canada -- well it's hard to say... maybe one bright light was the Ontario government's decision to have a new advisory group provide input into social policy - adjustments to welfare rates may be one result. But the province has a huge deficit brought on by the economic downturn so nothing may result from the group's work...
Lots of things not to like about the year past in the political world...our federal government's mean streak especially in dealing with critics and several Canadians seemingly abandoned when in trouble in other countries, and our almost absence or foot dragging on dealing with environmental issues... I was embarassed at our country's receiving of 'fossil' awards in Copenhagen.
Last winter's conflict in Israel and Gaza was most distressing. Both sides committed war crimes (according to human rights groups) yet neither appears to be taking that issue seriously...
The Sri Lankan civil war ended but justice has not arrived in that part of the country.
More locally I was continually amazed at how hypocritic and demonic' some of our talk show hosts in our city can be in their discussion of current events. Last winter's regrettable transit strike brought out the worst in their continuing war against public services and unions. Their attitudes towards Afghan detainees was most upsetting.
The continuning strife in Iran seem to predict interesting times in the month ahead.....

Federal Cabinet Ministers' Ratings
Just saw CTV's rating of our federal cabinet ministers....most make sense with a few notable exceptions.
They rate our Foreign Affairs Minister as a A- - saying he kept a low profile... gee how much lower could it get...
All he did all year was parrot an unsupportable line that people stranded in other countries were there for reasons beyond the control of the Canadian government... this despite clear evidence to the contrary. His line of reasoning always provoked (at least in my mind) the wordsl 'give me a break'. THe positive actions he apparently took in the Bahari case means I would have scored him a low C or a D.
A 'B' to the Minister of Justice... a normally non-partisan minister who seeemed to always be taking 'shots' at political opponents.. no wonder some of their so-called 'justice' bills are held up. The government's 'law and order' agenda seems to reflect ideology...maybe this is the way they appeal to their so-called base
I have difficulty grading our Immigration minister as a A. His Kairos speech in which he distorted that worthy NGO's position on the Middle East situation is not an event worthy of a A rating.
But their ratings of the Health Minister and International Trade Minister seem reasonable given everything they did this year...

And the Name is...
Cairo. I can never say my children were not creative in naming their children. Cairo is my fourth grandchild. Others have such 'usual' names as Trey, Giovanni, and Dayvan.
Regardless of their names I have the typical grandpa or zayde attitude.. they are nothing but wonderful.
Using this quiet time to 'catch up' and am receiving lots of congratulatory messages on our new grandson from as far away as Egypt and Great Britain

Wonderful Day
Late this morning an as yet not named young man arrived in this world. He is the newest member of our family. Our fourth grandson is now alive and well.
We are proud to once again become grandparents.

Seasonal Musings Plus Other
For those who celebrate Christmas - a significant holiday for Christians - Merry Christmas. May the message in the Christmas story - goodwill and peace be an ever increasing factor in your lives and those of all people.
For those who celebrate Christmas as a 'secular' day for family and friends - Have a good holiday season.
2009 was a fascinating year. We went through an economic downturn. Many lost... some won...
Interesting to hear that some of the heads of commercial outfits in the USA whose greedy behaviour started the worldwide recession, are now behaving just as they did before the recession started. And they were supported by massive bailouts of public money.
Sort of makes you wonder what kind of economic system we have in this 21st century.

The Past Decade's Most IMportant Event
Saw lots of discussion on media today about most significant events of past decade. Without a doubt the horrible events of September 11, 2001 stand out the most. So quickly the world changed that day. Thousands were killed, likely thousands were injured.. and millions affected world wide.
So much has changed since that day...

"Pot Calling the Kettle Black"
Heard a great example of this yesterday. One of Ottawa's most right wing talk show hosts was complaining about what he called 'CBC listeners' demonizing him in emails resulting from his appearance on a recent CBC radio show.
It was almost humorous listing to him. He criticized several writers for making comments about him...
But if one listens to his radio show anyone demonizing him pales in comparisons with his demonizing others who disagree with him. He is far better at demonizing 'others' than CBC listeners or anyone else for that matter. No one can approach this fellow in terms of demonizing others.

Mean Streak
I cannot understand the increasingly 'mean streak' shown by Canada's national government. The most recent example was their arbitrary cut off of Kairos - a Catholic service agency. A high level Cabinet Minister accused the organization of being anti-semitic.. only because it criticized certain policies of the Israeli government.
The current government recently went so far as to distribute literature in a number of areas of Canada accusing our main opposition party of being anti-semitic.
This bunch in power don't seem to understand one can criticize government all over the world but not get accused of being anti this or that group of people.
As a semite I can criticize policies of the Israeli government... but in the current federal government's eyes, that makes me an anti-semite.. an accustion that is totally and completely wrong!!
Mr. Kenney.. you don't speak for me.. you and your colleagues should restore KAIROS funding

Copenhagen - Good or Disappointment
Well we have an agreement in Copenhagen.., but cannot tell if it is a good one or just so-so. Have been monitoring twitter for up to date tweets on the climate change conference.
It would be nice if it was a good one to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But if media reports are accurate, most folks will be disappointed.
But on the other hand some progress is better than none.
Like many many others will watch as more details emerge...the reality is our economies will have to change and become less driven by carbon.

Various Stuff
Attending lots of events surrounding the Jewish festival of lights - Chanukah - all those potato pancakes...becoming stuffed with latkes...
Still unhappy with events in Copenhagen.. or more rightly.. unhappy at continuing attitude of Canadian authorities....
Mind you saw one suggestion for Canada which would improve our environmental impact in a significant way... Canada as a wealthy country should make a substantial contribution to helping developing countries cope with the effects of climate change. Will our political leaders have the ability to seize this opportunity?
It's amazing how otherwise bright folks still question the science of global warming and climate change. Just a touch of cold weather brings out all the conspiracy theories. Chatted about this with two other folks last evening who judge the degree of climate concern with this week's weather in Ottawa..how myopic can one be??

Copenhagen Shenanigans
What fun it must have been today in Denmark thanks to some clever pranksters - had lots to chuckle about.. the first news release; then the second news release; and then apparently a video.. all hoaxes.. oh what fun some people had at the expense of the current federal government.
But it has a tragicomedic feature. OUr Canadian government is on the 'wrong side' of the environmental file ever since it came to power. Major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions WILL affect our economy. I only wish our political leaders would join the efforts to update all economies to recognize the new environmental order.
Governments of our two largest provinces appear to get it. Why cannot our federal government?

Happy 61st Birthday
Today is the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - a monumental point in history
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to wish the Declaration a happy birthday. Wouldn't it be nice if human rights abuses were only in our 'history'? Meaning wouldn't it be nice if no one suffered human rights abuses anywhere in this world?
I could list those countries where practices amounting to human rights abuses still exist today. But the list would be too long....organizations such as Amnesty International catalogue over 150 countries in which serious human rights abuses exist.
People all over the world including here in Canada must continue to work towards creating a situation where all peoples everywhere can genuinely wish each other and the UDHR a 'Happy Birthday' on some future December 10.

Afghan Detainee Controversy in Canada
From where I sit I think our federal government just doesn't get it....international law prohibits torture or doing anything which may contribute to torture.
Given the apparent 'culture' in Afghanistan our government regardless of political stripe should have avoided placing detainees in detention in a culture of torture. We need an independent judicial inquiry. It's all really simple to understand.. assuming one wants to understand.

"They Blew It"
The report of the RCMP Complaints Commissioner according to media report severly slams the RCMP for how they handled the tasering of the Polish man at Vancouver airport in 2007.
Some time ago I had a chat with a relatively new RCMP member who summed up all the commentary on the four officers' handling of the whole case.. they just blew it.
My sense is the three word title of this post describes their behaviour that day. Tragically there was a totally unnecessary loss of life.

A Huge Country We Have Here
Well after seven driving filled days we are back home...great to be ensconced in usual quarters.
What a variety of scenery in this country...flat prairies; beautiful lakes; wonderful valleys and rivers...
Experienced snow squalls.. not very nice if you are driving on already snow covered roads.. but appropriate levels of caution one can safety arrive at destinations.
Saw daughter and boyfriend, and two grandsons during our time away.. all are good which is great

The Most Important Relationship Batch of All
We all have relationships in our lives. They go up and down; hot and cold... but soem are more important than others.
Some time ago I talked about my relationship with my spouse who is also my best friend.. .we had a wonderful time this past summer marking our 40th wedding anniversary.
I want to talk about another very important relationship. It's the one we have with our children. YOu know even when they grow up they are still our children. There isn't much (some might say we do too much) we won't do for our children.
This next week we are spending many days travelling to and from where our adult child lives. To the extent we can, we are helping her sort out some significant life cycle issues she is facing.
One may ask why we are going to all the hassles of travel (I may post comments during our trip)....well like all parents we are doing it as we love her. She entered our lives nearly 3 decades ago and it's been an exciting time ever since. She has grown up into a mature woman with normal young people's dreams and goals.
We are there both literally (at times) and figuratively to support her.

Johnny Come Lately
So I see our Prime Minister is going to Copenhagen for the climate change summit. I really wish he was going to 'lead the charge' for a real climate change treaty. But it seems that is not the case. All reports I have seen suggest Canada is one of the impediments to real progress in the fight against climate change.
I understand he is also attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. I hope he joins with thousands of others from around the world who have condemned the Government of Uganda for trying to criminalize homosexual conduct.

Why Hasn't Canada Eliminated Child Poverty?
After twenty years we still have the scourge of child poverty in Canada.... why?
We live in one of the richest, resourced countries in the world... but still have child poverty ...why?
Politicians say they wish to end child poverty.. but they don't.... why?
I could ask all day... you get the drift...

NIMBY TO YIMBY
As those who use Facebook and Twitter know by now I attended a forum put on in Ottawa by the Alliance to End Homelessness.
In my view by far the most interesting part of the forum was a report on a Toronto group's success in converting its neighbourhood from a 'Not In My Back Yard' to 'Yes, in My Back Yard'.
The secret appears to be continuous dialogue with the neighbourhood.. both in door to door format by the individuals themselves. Neighbours get to know the new folks who will be their neighbours and lessen their fears of these new neighbours.
I also saw a report on a CMHC study on the same subject. It refers to communication as indicated above plus effective use of the media; development of relationships with local politicians, and development of a clear plan, an understanding of the community process, and persistence.
The only thing missing as I see it is how to deal with those centres of our community which are 'opinion leaders' in terms of stereotyping folks in affordable housing projects and homeless shelters. In many communitites these centres are 'radio talk show hosts'. Of coures using the strategies mentioned earlier may overcome the negativity of these types of naysayers.

Homelessness
Why do we have homeless folks in Canada? I believe a country like ours which is so blessed with resources should not have people with no place to stay... yet we do.
There is a need for more housing so no one has to live on the street.
Our shelters seemed to be always full.. in some communities I have heard any person who wants a place to sleep will always find there is a place..but one has to be in a 'crisis' to find such a place....
Wouldn't it be nice if homelessness did not exist???

It Really is a better game
Don't normally write about professional sports.. but here's to the football as played in Canada. A wider field, 12 players on a team, a single point, and you need to advance 10 yards in three attempts...
Far better than the US equivalent....
Far better than the US equivalent....
'wedge' politics
I think I now know why I am uncomfortable with the current federal Conservative government. They seem masters at finding ways to set one group of Canadians against another group. Look at several things the past few days alone.
1 Not moving to really deal with allegations of torture of Afghan detaineees
2 Portraying another political party as anti-semitic when all know that is untrue
3 The continual refusal to treat Omar Khadr as a child soldier and resisting court decisions to repatriate him
Their actions (through their officials) dealing with the Canadian citizen in Kenya a few months ago and the Canadian citizen in Sudan are more of the same.
It's almost like they think they can build popular support by being 'mean' to people they disagree with.

Controversy Over Conservatives Ten Percenters
Gee how low can a political party go...apparently lower than anything done so far.
I am appalled at latest federal Conservative party portrayal of folks who criticize Israel as being anti-semitic. Since when does criticism of any country make one a "anti" towards the religion or people of the predominant ethnic or religious group in that country.
One can criticize Canada's policies and not be labelled anti-Canadian; one can criticize policies of the Vatican and not be anti-Catholic. One can criticize policies of Iran or Sudan and not be anti-Muslim. BUt if one express an iota of concern about Israel, some of its 'defenders' hurl the anti-semitism charge at the those expressing concern.
I saw all the furore in the media on this yesterday. The furore is justified in my view. No Canadian of any ethnic background should support a party that demonizes opposition. This current governing party appears determined to divide Canadians - it thinks it can gain politically by pitting groups of Canadians against each other.
Canadians we have to stop this at election time whenever that comes.

Cable TV - Local TV Stations Battles
Quite bemused by CRTC hearings on right now. So let's see local TV stations many of whom are part of profitable CTV networkswant payment from Bell and Rogers and other cable companies for local signals. Cable companies want to pass (and are passing costs on to consumers). Cable companies also distribute signals of local TV stations which increase advertising revenues for local TV stations. Hmm.. something doesn't make sense here...
Is there not a conglomerate knowns a Bell CTV which owns both Bell and CTV. Isn't this a case of one arm of the large outfit arguing with another arm of the same outfit.
CTV which is bemoaning its revenue shortall still manages to sponsor a 6 concert pop music series at Canada's National Arts Centre.
All this sort of makes one wonder why all the fuss???

Times Change - Activities Vary
For the last ten years I have been a member of an amazing group of human rights activists. All are members of English speaking branch of Amnesty International Canada.
The organization has a nearly half century long live in our world. It is one of the largest human rights organizations in existence today. It is a widely dispersed membership organization in countries all over the world.
It has shown itself to be quite adapt to changing circumstances. Whether one looks at its various websites or chats with activists one can see it has joined the social network world.
In Canada at least it has found a way to actively engage people who are post 'baby boomers'. It has had very young adults hold top positions in its volunteer leadership.
The 'amazing group' I spoke about earlier are called fieldworkers. We have been about 50 really activist people. Any reader in Canada interested in learning more can contact staff via www.amnesty.ca.
Having said all this it is time to move on in my life... interests do change over one's life. I remain a committed human rights activist.

anti HST grouping in Ontario and BC and Other Stuff
It 'pains' me to see progressive political forces in BC and Ontario aligning themselves with traditonally more conservative forces. It's an unholy alliance.
Some time ago I happened to run into a government MLA in Ontario. He reminded me that there will be a HST-credit system similar to the GST credit. While the amounts paid to low income earners may not be as much as it should be (I certainly agree it should be more), the practice of paying (non taxable) credits to low income folks is good public policy.

Various Stuff
See our government has brought in new citizenship handbook.. wanna have a good look at it but have some anxst over media reports it may be part of a 'rebranding' exercise.
Spent an informative 4 hours this past weekend learning how to use social media. Lots of new stuff to try out.. including making this blog more widely known.
Met some local folks involved in promoting 'Charter of Compassion'. All faiths support compassion. Cannot decide if the Charter will make a difference...like so many other things time will tell.
Have written on consumption taxes a few weeks ago. I see our province is bringing in enabling legislation today.

November 14 is Diabetes Day
Tomorrow.. Saturday is World Diabetes Day. All of us are touched directly or indirectly by diabetes. It especially affects people in the Aboriginal community here in Canada. We have Aboriginal relatives and can attest to the sadness it causes.
Thousands of people are unaware they have diabetes.. such a reality is so sad.
Check out worlddiabetes.ca and share your story about experience with diabetes.

February is Heart Month
In Canada at least February is Heart Month. The Heart and Stroke Foundation runs a 'residential canvass' to raise funds for its much needed and very popular programs promoting better healthy lifestyles and research support activities.
I intend to canvass for them in February 2010... and you should too if you can!

Variety of Topics
It's been a while so here goes.....
Did the two minute silence thing yesterday. We must always remember our history. Started wondering though about whether we should be updating our practices on November 11 to recognize our country's changing family structures. Our silver cross mother role...maybe it's time to recognize other than traditional roles of parents of soldiers we lose. With the increasing acceptability of same sex relationships maybe it's time to have one 'silver cross parent' who is a member of our lesbian or gay community. Also is 'silver cross' most appropriate in a multicultural society?
Saw somewhere that Palestinian rival groups may be looking at some type of agreement. Gee if they do agree, then maybe them and Israelis could develop some type of agreement too.. wouldn't that be wonderful....
I understand Canada's highest court is to rule soon on Khadr. I hope they confirm lower courts' views that he is a child soldier and must be repatriated....
Somewhat bemused at Lady Thatcher incident where death of a federal Cabinet Minister's pet was mistaken for news about former British Prime Minister of same name.
Oh yes... I got H1N1 flu shot last Sunday... experience went well....

H1N1 Vaccine
I am in the 'higher risk' group... so I'll be getting a vaccine sooner rather than later. I trust the medical professionals.
Have little patient with those who don't. Even if you don't think you'll come down with H1N1 infection you could infect others who are close to you.. get the shot!!
Imagine a worst case scenario... a parent refuses to have their child vaccinated; and their child gets the flu...how awful that would be.. get the shot!
Like everyone else I worry about long lineups....but am still getting the shot!

Politics Canadian Style
Hmm let's see.. a continuing furore over governing party misusing public funds for partisan purposes (didn't this happen before)...and smaller parties who say they would nver support governments but who are propping up governments with whom they fundamentally disagree.
On the other hand some interparty co-operation may be going on too.
Hard to tell the players ...even with a program....

Blog Action Day Entry
We have to to something to protect our world. When our political leaders meet later this year we must reach agreement to protect our planet.
While doing this our leaders in the developing world must understand that as the principal causes of planet degradation, they must take the lead in reducing our footprint. It's unfair to expect countries who have contributed little to our carbon footprint to bear the same responsibility for its reduction as our most developed countries.
I am quite disappointed to hear our own government is now seen as a laggard on effective climate change prevention action.

Local Multifaith Housing Group is Making a Difference
As most know I live in the national capital of Canada. A very innovative group is making a difference in the pressing need for more affordable housing in our community. About seven years ago a group of leaders in a number of faith communities banded together in what is now called the Multifaith Housing Initiative.
Despite the challenges of working together in a new field the Initiative has been quite successful in increasing the supply of affordable housing in our community.
Check out http://multifaithhousing.ca/ for all the details

Has It Come to This. Canadian Politics in 2009
I think I read something today about one of Canada's political leaders has denied an intention to have an 'adult discussion with Canadians' on how to get our public finances out of debt.
If this is true it is a regrettable state of affairs in our great country. Realistic analysis of the size of our public deficit and debt clearly points to the necessity of increasing government revenues. Governments' main source of revevnue is taxation and other fees charged for public services.
Yet political leaders of all stripes have 'swallowed' all the anti-tax line first propagated by people like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher and embraced by Canadian politicians like Michael Harris and Stephen Harper.
Our country has become less caring since the early 1980's as government have withdrawn from many of our innovative social programs.. all in the interest of reducing taxes. Our public sector's ability to effect real social and economic change is limited due to successive, and in some cases, really unnecessary tax cuts.
Taxes pay for health care, education, transportation infrastructure, welfare, emergency protection etc. etc. THese are important to society and should be properly funded...which is NOT happening now thanks to widespread preoccupation with 'cutting taxes'.

My Views on Consumption Taxes Like HST
Sales taxes are essentially unfair but necessary for the reasons
outlined below.
They are 'consumption taxes'.. the more you consume a good or service
the more you pay. They are unfair as the tax paid represents a greater
portion of a person's disposable income if the person is at a low income
level. They unfairly penalize lower income earners.
However, some argue it's a good tax as high income earners pay a lot of
consumption tax as they consume more goods and services (including what we
might call luxury goods and services).
Also a consumption tax may cause a desireable change of public/consumer
behaviour. That is why the carbon tax idea was good public policy
What some governments do (federal does although it is not good enough),
is (either on the income tax form or via periodic payments), is pay flat
credits to people. Low income Canadians receive quarterly payments from the federal government called GST credits. They don't compensate for all GST paid but certainly provide some help.
Ontario government is planning on giving grants to every person to help with the transition to the HST.
Quebec, and some of the Atlantic provinces have a HST.
Finally many opponents of the HST are right wing conservatives who
dislike government doing anything in our society. They mistakenly believe
things like health care; education; welfare; emergency services don't cost
anything. Governments need revenue to pay for these activities. It pains
me to see federal and provincial NDP politicians agreeing with the likes of
Stephen Harper, Michael Harris etc.(I could add as wll most of the crowd who are on
or who phone talk radio stations)

Happenings
Our daughter was released from hospital a few days ago.. still have health issues but seems like they will be overcome.
So our federal goverment survived a confidence vote...how long will this continue until Canadians can 'spank' their politicians and tell them less partisanship and more collaboration (hey that's a good alternative to coalition)
Heard a right wing radio talk show host bemoaning what he called personal attacks on supporters of the 'Lansdowne Live' project here in Ottawa. To hear him speak almost made me phone him and tell him his concerns were like the pot calling the kettle black. He is well experienced in the art of personal attacks.

What's Really Important in Life and Other Musings
You know as parents we never stop worrying about our children...it's like we're 'hard wired' to worry. Our nearly 28 year old child is having major health challenges right now. THey are temporary in nature but we still cannot help but worry.
We hope things will progress in her overcoming these challenges.. but we will continue to worry.
See lots of stuff about Iran in the news.. sometimes think they may focuss on its nuclear ambitions/plans. Yet we don't focus on others who have nuclear capability.. wonder why sometimes.
Of all the ideas of the Iranian president the most distressing is his comments about the Holocaust. To question its historicity is the height of madness. Criticism of actions of te State of Israel does not make one an anti-semite. But questioning the truthfulness of hte holocaust which carried out acts of genocide against European Jewry is most definitely anti-semitic.
I see Canadian political party shenanigans will resume this week...but I doubt all three opposition parties will be able to force an election.. unless it happens by accident...

keeping busy
Still doing lots of stuff... Spending hours and hours helping to bring one of my tax clients up to date on tax filings...kinda wish our Canada Revenue Agency had capability to work through processes somewhat quicker.. but that's probably unlikely.
On that point I see that Agency as a group of individuals who have a job to do. Unlike some of the so-called tax lawyers out there I don't see them as the arch villain of our society. They are essentially an administrative body acting on behalf of policy makers. The CRA must act in a fair manner and my experience has been they usually do.
Had an example of inadvertent 'corporate greed' on a small level this week. I have a friend who went into a nursing home about 18 months ago who forgot to cancel his cable service. His preauthorized withdrawal continued for 18 months. However the cable provider has outlined how to get much of the money back.. and will know in a day or so if it will follow through.
I am nearing this year's end of what has become a longstanding one month a year relationship with the Canadian Diabetes Association. Have met four wonderful colleagues. We have been recruiting residential canvassers for the Association's November campaign at an unprecedented rate.

Various Again
Well the UN General assembly meets this week... and President Obama meets with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. I wish both Netanyahu and Abbas had the political 'clout' to work towards real peace in that part of the world. But I fear that divisions within both countries (Israel and Palestine) will prevent real progress towards peace.
You know most Palestinians and Israelis desperately want peace. Imagine what kind of economic development could occur with peace in the Middle East. If only settlements were halted; if only the Saudi 2002 peace plan were implemented; and if only demonizing the 'other side' would stop.. we could have peace.....
I read a couple of other blogs on a regular basis.. I guess I shouldn't complain about biased political blogging as some readers here may think I do it too ((:-)).
Glad to see that senior politicians and military are questioning effectiveness of NATO's mission in Afghanistan. Clearly something is not working... What is especially good is that Canadian and American political opinion-leaders are beginning to discuss the mission without having to face accusations of not supporting our soldiers.
I am participating in one or two world wide initiatives today. Both originated in online communications.. a short prayer time for peace; and a public event urgingG20 leaders to DO something to fight climate change.

Various Stuff Again
Ouch the 'body bag' issue in Canada. Seems like our federal health authorities included body bags in a shipment of supplies to some Aboriginal communities in Manitoba. What kind of a message does that give to members of those communities. Hopefully the investigation now on will result in the public knowing how this could happen.. such insensitivity and plain dumbness!!!
Two (or is it three) of our federal political parties have switched roles. How confusing can it be.
The very best for 5770 to Jewish readers of this blog. May you be inscribed in the Book of Life.

Various Stuff
Heard item this morning about various opinions on swine flu vaccine. It's effectiveness is being questioned by some. Yet most professional opinion supports its use. My own view is it is better being safe than sorry. An unusual thing with swine flu is that I am not in the high risk group (according to what I've heard). Nevertheless I'll probably end up getting the vaccine.
Our federal political 'circus' starts today in earnest. I hear changes to our Employment Insurance system are coming. Will they help our unemployed (I hope so)? Will then be a cynical attempt to ensure the current government gets support from one of the opposition parties (I feel so). On the other hand a government party trying to get support from one opposition party is what is expected in a minority government situation.
THere is continuing debate here in Ontario over the province's move to 'harmonize' its sales tax with the goods and services tax. People have strong views both ways on the harmonized sales tax idea. On balance though, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. That belief is based on the practice (to date) of taxing authorities providing relief from this consumption tax by rebating a portion of it to lower income people.
Speaking of debates it is 'instructive' to watch public health care debate in US. The last developed country to have a public system of health insurance. Yet it spends more on health care on a per capita basis. Opponents of President Obama's initiative are using outlandish and yes, reprehensible tactics. Obama's indication he is the 'last' president to deal with this issue is noteworthy (and praiseworthy).

co-operation not coalition
How many times do our political leaders have to say something before it is believed. Hearing politicians says things 'over and over' again makes one wonder if their 'notes' ever change.
Sounds like even if we have a federal election in Canada this fall, we will end up with a similarly-composed House of Commons. So the parties will have to co-operate regardless of the result.
Any 'my way or the highway' approach by party leaders should be firmly and completely rejected by the voters.

September 11, 2001 remembered and follow up
Eight years ago our world changed. Most of us remember what we were doing when we heard of the terrorist attacks in the United States. We all watched in horror as thousands of innocent people died that day.
Our world has changed so much since that days. Many of the democratic countries in the world has passed draconian laws restricting civil liberties of their citizens and residents. In many places of business there is almost a paranoia about security. CUstomer service defintely is subordinated to security concerns. As an example at government offices in this town some of which won't accept envelopes for employees working in those offices unless the employee is there to accept it in person.
We will never know the complete motivation of the perpetrators of the 911 attacks. Butif it was to create a continuing sense of paranoia they seem to have succeeded.. such a tragedy.

Social Justice vs. Social Change
I have often thought about this issue (maybe mislabelled as well).
In societies like here in Canada we have a plethora of organizations in the human services area that help folks dealing with a variety of issues. A major group of human service organizations are food banks and emergency housing shelters.
Many of us at various times help out at these agencies. Yet when we do that are we 'tolerating' societal conditions which makes these agencies exist. One has to ask why food is distributed so inequitably in countries all over the world. Why do some people find themselves with no place to live. Why are instances of gender-based violence such a problem.
YOu know if we had really 'caring' society we would not need these types of institutions.
I know very progressive-minded individuals who decline to volunteer at these organizations for the very reason mentioned above.
Our public financial system ('taxes') does in part help reduce social inequities by its progressive nature at least at the federal and provincial levels in Canada. But I have sympathy with those who feel the 'anti-tax' hysteria of the last 25 years have severely restricted government (the political arm of society) to help reduce soical inequity.
Here in Canada 20 years ago all federal politicians voted to end child poverty by 2000...that's almost a decade ago and we still have child poverty in Canada.

Labour Day Weekend 2009
YOu know if one looks around at most of our socially progressive laws in our country.. dealing with human rights and employment standards, it is the labour movement that was one of the first groups to push for change.
My understanding is they have always groups like trade unions pushing for better working conditions.. not only for their members.. but also for all others in societies..not only here but all over the world.
People who criticize trade unions.. and there are lots of critics out there.. just don't get it...but if they honestly looked at the history of unions they should change their minds... regrettably many are so warped in an anti-union bias they don't want facts to interfere with an opinion.\\

Pre-Election Shenanigans
Oh the level of hypocrisy from our political leaders. If you believe our current government, it's popular home renovation tax credit may not be in place if a federal election is held. But all parties support the measure. All academic and other commentators have said an election won't significantly affect Canadians' ability to benefit from the credit.
My sense is the economist and other commentators have got it right.
Our governing party spokespeople say any fall 2009 election is unnecessary. But they did not say that a year ago...how times 'change' ((:-))

A 2009 Canadian Federal Election.. Maybe
Well we are again in 'election' mode according to recent pronouncements of the federal Liberals and the media.
I see lots of folks are saying 'no one' wants an election. Well I beg to differ. As I have indicated before elections are the highest form of democratic expression that we know. I don't believe the corporate world's fears of 'uncertainty' are grounded in fact at all!!!!
If parliamentarians cannot agree then bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!
If we do have an election I suspect results will be quite similar to current House of Commons. We so badly need electoral reform so the public varying views will be better represented in Parliament.

Surprises and a Meeting
Well I was surprised by Doer's appointment.. but what do I really know?? ((:-))
Most readers know I run an income tax preparation business. Today I met in person a client who I have known for almost a year. It was really nice to put a face to lots of email messages and phone calls.
Even though I support strongly the use of electronic communication for working (and living) in the 21st century, it was nice to meet someone in person.\\

Varia
Well see that our Prime Minister is again breaking a promise about Senate appointments...hmmm...maybe best solution is outright abolition of that so-called 'august' body.
Heard radio speculation about ambassadorial appointment for Gary Doer. Wonder what's behind that? Given history of different parties I would be a little surprised if it happens. But then Pierre Trudeau appointed Stephen Lewis to UN; and recommended Ed Schreyer ror GG. So the surprise is 'little' not big.
Hear that someone is trying to 'out' a blogger here in ottawa.. have mixed feelings...I for one.. have no problem being identified as source of all these posts...on the other hand if the blogger in question has something important to say (and is open to a job loss) then maybe the identity should remain secret.. remember "Deep Throat"

Unfair Situations
I recently met a person who has had a lot of 'challenges' in their lives. The economic issues have led to significant health challengs.
It is a striking example how economics drives all. I believe our health care system; justice system; and so many other issues in our society are 'driven' by economic issues.
We need to continue to work towards a more equal/egalitarian world.

Omar Khadr Again
Heard our right wing talk show hosts again today making intellectual leapfrogs to justify our government's decision to try to stay court order that the government repatriate a Canadian citizen from Guatanamo.
Heard several well informed callers trying to make point that our Charter of Rights and Freedoms overrides government policies. Our courts (made up of qualified jurists) only interprets our laws.. not interfering with foreign policy-making.
The longer our government resists the inevitable repatriation of this Canadian, the more desperate it and its supporters looks....

The Times They Are a Changing
Well folks are getting more and more mobile these days. I tend to live a life which includes lots of 'running around'.. well more accurately lots of driving around. Operating an income tax preparation business; working part time for various charities; doing lots of visiting as a volunteer.
I have decided to improve my 'technological' capacity to doing all this stuff!! I have been thinking of starting to use a 'netbook' computer.. well I have... early indications are it will be quite an improvement over the previous notebook...
Of course like all things technological.. this will be obsolete in a matter of months ((:-))

Canadian Election Speculation
Lots of media commentary the last few days about a fall federal election in Canada. They are expensive and a bother.. but I think they are the highest level of expression in a democracy. It forces the competing political parties to clearly lay out their vision for our country.

Some Say Recession is Over.. Who are They Kidding
Some economists and are statistics reporting agency are saying the recession in Canada is over. I suggest they should tell that to those who cannot find work; or who have been laid off. Tell it to those who fear asking for credit as they don't feel they will get it. Tell it to those who are choosing to skip medication; or to skimp on food so they can pay rent.
Let's home our wealthier group of people understand that until we have close to full employment, many will find it hard to understand the so-called 'end' of the recession.

Protectionism Hits Both Ways
I hear there are lots of 'cries' in our country against a 'Buy American' policy in the US. Yet we have agricultural marketing boards and the Canadian Wheat board.
Also I think that lots of developed countries have trade barriers against the free flow of goods from the developing world.
Isn't it a case sometimes, of the pot calling the kettle black??

Recession and Health
Heard today the Canadian Medical Association says some Canadians particularly those on low incomes are skipping medications to save money.
Duh... what do they expect. Of course when times are tough people make choices. Isn't that a nature of society.
REgardless of the causes of the recession or economic downturn it concerns me when relatively well off members of our society bemoan those less well off for making normal decision on how they allocate scarce resources. Maybe if our physicians supported pharmacare and prescribed only generic medications wherever possible then lower income residents would not have to make such choices.
I recently met a person whose has huge economic challenges (skips meals regularly to pay rent and is forced to eat lots of pasta rather than fresh vegetables and fruit which are too expensive) caused by a woefully inadequate safety net in our province. I suppose the Canadian Medical Association (and like organizations) will bemoan people like her making these choices.
Maybe if we believed in (and had) a more egalitarian society people would not be forced to make choices like the ones mentioned by the CMA. Maybe in federal and provincial authorities were not so paranoid about raising taxes, we could create a more caring country.

It Has To Be Done
YOu know I want to talk about another 'sometimes we try to avoid topic'. My spouse and I are both in our 60's. We are both quite healthy and look forward to a long life together with many many years remaining.
Yet the reality is we are all mortal 'creatures'. Invariably our lives will end at some point. We have come to believe we should make some type of final arrangements for ourselves. The need for pre-arranged final plans hit us 'right in the head' when we lost our daughter in 2006. We 'flew by the seat of our pants' in making arrangements.
Today we continue our exploration of all options for final arrangements.
We were both shocked and a little bemused to two friends' comments on this issue. One told me they had made no arrangements (the friend is 2 years older than I am). The other who is over 10 years older said they had made no arrangements as they were not planning on being at their own funeral.
It is an unpleasant situation to contemplate but we know it has to be done....

ideologically-based politics
Saw good example why many Canadians have difficulty supporting a party like the NDP. At their convention which I watched on the parliamentary channele yesterday, many delegates indicated outright opposition to public-private partnerships (3P). In most cases they were focussing on 3P in the health sector. Much of that opposition makes sense to me. A 3P health project invariably means government re-allocates money to support these projects and may mean a shift AWAY from other government priorities be they health care, education, transportation etc. In theory I believe 3P is 'bad' for essential government services.
But the reality is there are so many legitimate demands for public services in Canada. Even provincial NDP governments have engaged in 3P projects (mind you they might be 'at pains' not to call them 3P). I remember when I worked in Saskatchewan, legislation was introduced by my department authorizing 'transportation partnerships' whereby government and 'other persons' (meaning companies) could jointly fund road development.
The outright condemnation of the concept demonstrates what I would call an 'immature' attitude by some of the delegates I saw speak at the convention.
It reminds me of some of the attitudes I frequently hear from our current federal government supporters. Blanket condemnations of government's role in our economy, the attitude towards immigrants, and other disadvantaged groups also are 'immature' statements and reflect ideologically-based views.
Whichever party makes Canadians feel it is pragmatic and willing to compromise, is the party that will inevitably succeed in our federal political scene.

It's Now Over and Past
Wow..,. over 80 friends and family attended our local celebration of our 40th anniversary this afternoon... it was so nice seeing some very dear friends, colleagues from several nonprofits; many of my business clients; and especially my inlaws who came in from Kingston just to be with us.
The good feelings were prevalent all the time.
Our 40th wedding anniversary is now past.. but the memories of the two events; last week in REgina; and this week in Ottawa will remain for a long time.

Anniversary
Well today close to 100 (we hope) friends and acquaintances will join us to celebrate our recent 40th anniversary. IT is the highlight of our weekend.

Upcoming weekend
supposed to be hot this weekend.. maybe our first hot weekend of the summer of 2009.
It's the 40th anniversary of Woodstock this weekend...so much happened in 1969.. the end of an exciting decade, not the least of which was our marriage in August of that year.
We had our first anniversary celebration last weekend in Regina.. this weekend we're having one here in Ottawa.
Then on Sunday I am taking a brand new 60 year old friend (and client) to lunch.

Yesterday
Uneventful trip home. Saved huge taxi fare as close friend picked us up at airport.
Now finalizing plans for anniversary event at home location.
Found out yesterday about new (well not really new as I have done it for several years) part time jobs starting at end of month. Will be once again working up to 16 hours a week for the Diabetes Association in September. Job is to 'telerecruit' canvassers for their November residential campaign. I know a number of folks with diabetes and it's such a life altering condition. Their November campaign is most important to raise funds for their advocacy and public awareness raising work.
Weather on our return to Ottawa was more typical of Ottawa weather in the summer.......hot and humid.
Today and tomorrow... amongst other things resuming some of my volunteer visits to people.

Monday
Spent some time yesterday seeing (once again) the Saskatchewan Science Centre. Even though he has gone there many many times, our 11 year old still finds new stuff there.. and our 6 year old loves to run around it. THe facility is now 20 years old but still manages to have new displays whenever we are there.
Today is our last full day in Saskatchewan.. spending time with grandsons (of course) our daughter and fiance (of course); and final hours this evening informally with available friends at local 'watering' place.

Goings On
Spent a few minutes at Regina Folk Festival today.. would have spent longer if my best friend and grandson were willing to stay longer.. but that's what relationships are all about.. right??
Otherwise had a six year old tour guide to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.. you know I've never had such a quick tour of any facility...lots of fun
Helping our 20's something daughter finish a move this evening... have to run

40 Years Together.. It Can Be Done
Forty years ago today at about 3:00 PM local time I married my best friend. A lot has happened over the 40 years. We moved 3000 km. within a month of our marriage to start a life in Saskatchewan. We lived in Saskatoon for two years doing postgraduate work in political science. We met several friends one of whom is still a close friend who will be joining us in our celebration today.
In late 1971 we moved to Regina to begin a provincial government career which lasted nearly 30 years. We lived in apartments first but then bought our first home in 1975. We tended to move (some might say way too much) frequently during our Regina tenure. But all of them we could justify for our own reasons.
We started a family in the early 1980's and had all the normal (and some might say too many) challeges as parents. Both our girls gave us lots of pleasures and lots of headaches. On balance though parenthood is good. Our older daughter had a tough life which tragically ended all too soon at a young age. Our younger daughter who has also had difficult issues to deal with has become an aspiring mature young woman who is extremely confident in her dealings with work, family, and friends.
We are now the grandparents of 3 boys and just found out yesterday we have another grandson on the way.
My best friend and I are believers in helping others in our community. My best friend was an active guide leader in the 1980's. I was active in many non-government organizations in the 1970's; 1980's; and 1990's. Several of the people I met during those days have remained friends or have been 'rediscovered' through the wonders of facebook ((:-)).
40 years is a time to look both backwards and forwards. We are both happy at this stage of life's journey.
How did we get through 40 years? 'Acceptance' is the key. One always has to acknowledge the 'wants' of the other. One accepts that one does NOT always get one's way. One 'defers' in many many cases to the wishes of the other. Acceptance is a mutual two way 'street'. This is how it's done everyone!

life's going on
Well.. found out today I'll be a four time grandpa with four grandsons sometime in late December....you know it's amazing... just three days ago my Aunt who was nearly 85 passed away in Vancouver. Then just a little over 72 hours later we hear word about a life yet to begin. "The Circle of Life" to quote a movie of some 15 years ago.
Spent another several enjoyable hours with grandsons again.
tomorrow's the day.. our 40th wedding anniversary....

You've Got to Be Careful What you Put on Facebook
In my earlier blog today I talked about how one of the things I was doing in Regina today was visiting the gravesite of our older daughter who passed away three years ago this month. I mentioned this point in my 'status' on facebook.. well I got lots of 'condolence/memorial' type of comments. Very thoughtful of those friends making those comments but I am not in a 'condolence' mood at all. Our daughter was a part of and always will be a part of our lives. But I personally believe a lifespan has discrete parts...
And one more thing
Our daughter and her fiance are now thinking of an August long weekend wedding next summer. A wonderful reason to come back to Saskatchewan.
Hi from Out West
Flew to Regina yesterday. Spent several hours with our 20's something daughter and her fiance. Seem like a grand couple. Saw her current place (she's moving elsewhere in a few days).
Spent about 2-3 hours with two young gentlemen.. our 11 and 6 year old grandsons. It's wonderful to see these two guys every year or so. Watching them grow is an exciting experience for a grandparent. OUr 11 year is now as tall as his grandmother and will likely pass me in the next couple of years. Our 6 year old grandson is looking like a smart young man.. missing a tooth or two but that's expected of a six year old.
We do have another grandson (six this month) who we're unsure if we will be seeing at all this trip.
The most significant reason for the trip is occurring on Saturday. That day marks the 40th anniversary our wedding. About 50 of our close family and friends will be celebrating with us. We spent 31 of the 40 years in Regina (+2 in Saskatoon) so we thought it right to mark our actual anniversary date with people we think so highly of.
Today we have a sad event. Many of our friends know that three years ago we had a tragedy in our family.. our then 27 year old daughter passed away. Today we make our 'every visit' to her gravesite to remember her.

One Day Left
Last full day before trip out west ....lots of 'running around' but hey.. that is normal.....
Looking at weathernetwork website... seems like it will be cooler in Saskatchewan...but that's normal too.
Heard radio item this morning about Nixon resignation 35 years ago this week. That was a time when power did corrupt.
Hope to put up regular entries during next week

Aw Gee!!
there was a song some time ago about "When I woke up this morning... you were on my mind..."... well today we 'woke up this morning.. and rain was on our mind'. After lots of expectations we would have nice weather this weekend... well the summer of 2009 returned to normal.. rainy most of the day.. what a bummer.
Doesn't look like much outdoor activity.
Terrible news item about shooting in Tel Aviv at a gay establishment. When will people understand it's ok to have different sexual orientation. Peoples all over the world need to become more accepting of other lifestyles. My only restriction on that would be no one's lifestyle should violate another's basic human rights.
I fail to see how a gay lifestyle violates any other person's human rights. So I join in the strong condemnation of homophobia whenever it raises its 'ugly head'....

Long Weekend
Well we have a long weekend coming up (first Monday in August is a holiday in most Canadian provinces).. and the weather is supposed to be quite good.... Hooray for that!!!
Saturday afternoon I am helping out at a display at a Moslem SUmmer Festival. I find the prospects of learning more about other faiths greatly enhanced by being exposed to other faiths. I am eagerly awaiting this learning opportunity.
If all goes as planned, having third trip this summer to Upper Canada Village......this time highlight is not 'politics' in the 1860's.. but rather marriage in those times. Attending a 'wedding' on Sunday.
As my bio says I run an income tax preparation business. Despite it being a seasonal business I find there is demand year round (sure the demand is much lower most of the time).. but will be meeting two brand new clients in next few days.

Ramblings (Again)
Hey weather looks nice for a few days.
Heard item on today's news about the famous beer drinking session at WHite House today. Most insightful comment was from lawyer for woman who made famous 911 call. The comment was 'right on'....the three guys who made mistakes in whole episode get to drink beer at the White House...yet the woman who did the good neighbourly thing (and made no racist comments whatsoever) gets left out. She may not like beer but why wasn't she invited to socialize with the President.
Aw.. the multiple murder of three teenager and their stepmother in that car found in Kingston Ontario. I don't know if 'honour killings' are involved but clearly this seems to be a case of domestic violence (ie violence against women). When will all peoples agree violence against women is NEVER ACCEPTABLE. All cultures and communities must learn to stop violence against women.
Islam as well as all other religions severely condemn violence against women. I just wish adherents of various faiths would follow their faith's teachings.

Politics in 1860's
Well...had a chance to see politics as practised in 1860's .. it was election days this weekend at Upper Canada Village. They had two candidates (A Conservative and Liberal Reformer) making speeches and meeting with prospective (male only) electors although they welcomed women to the speech-making events.
Both candidates had 'handlers' who led the cheerleading for their candidate and the 'booing' of the other candidate.
Both sides accused the other of handling out money to bribe voters. THe Liberal Reformer candidate said he would never do such a thing.. but you know he couldn't bind his supporters. I asked if his handler had any spare money.. and you know he gave me $2 (regrettably not in real money).
It was fascinating to watch a political process of almost 150 years old. We really have come a long way...but you know some issues remain .. albeit in different format... taxes, separate schools, relations with the Americans etc.
Really enjoying the visits to Upper Canada Village this summer...we missed one visit because of our crazy rainy weather

Worrisome Episode
When I had the radial surgery procedure all the stuff I read mentioned that the procedure would take time to work...up to 2 years before malformed arteries and veins would be all sealed up. I was told would still have occasional bouts of numbness/tingling...
Well early this morning the advice I received was demonstrated in 'spades'. For about ten minutes (maybe even more) my left hand was 'useless'. Lots of numbness (even had sensation some was into my arm). As has always been the case, after 10-15 minutes was ok...
But at 4:00 AM one is not wide awake and has lots of thoughts going through one's mind...somewhat scary if I do say so myself.
Now feel great.. nothing wrong at all........................

2009 is Special Year
It's a year of significant anniversaries for lots of people and events...today going to a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for a cousin of mine.
2009 is the 40th anniversary of our wedding. Everyone who hears that says 'congratulations' and 'how wonderful'.. being together for this long takes hard work.. but it's worth it.. especially if one considers one's spouse to be one's best friend...I commented on this in an earlier entry.
It's the anniversary of the lunar landing.
Our highlight is a trip to see family and friends.. in less than 3 weeks; plus a wonderful get together with friends and family here in mid August

working away and carrying on!
Hey we may get a few days of dry weather..would't that be nice.
Dealing with Canada Revenue Agency today on some adjustments to earlier years' returns.. it's one of the things tax preparers get to do during the off-season.
Having had an annual physical this week (a highly recommended occurrence for us older folks ((:-)), now the inevitable followup with the pharmacist to renew prescriptions....but you know although I have had several health issues the last few years the effects of any medication I am taking is that I feel great just about all the time......

Goings On
Today I have what has become a semi-annual (hope it will change to annual) visit with cardiologist. I like it that he wants to check with me regularly.. I was diagnosed with coronary aterial disease about three years ago. But I have been taking medication regularly and feel great.
On a very isolated basis and only for very short periods of time I do get chest pains.. but they always pass...
I also just got notice of when I need first bloodwork and MRI late in the 2009 as a followup to my radial surgery in June...tingling hardly ever occurs...and when it does, doesn't last too long (doctors told me I would still get occasional episodes which is normal....it will be two years before we are sure procedure was completely successful).
As always I'm carry on!!

New Visa Policies
While some might argue that the new requirement for Mexicans and Czechs will reduce possibilities of 'abuse' of refugee system, the reality is that legitimate refugees are at risk of being denied protection in Canada.
I don't know all the details of happenings in Mexico and the Czech Republic but in the latter I am aware of widespread discrimination and human rights violations against the Roma minority.
The comparison with the 1930's Canadian attitude towards European Jews trying to flee the Nazis is scary.. but has a ring of truth...

Reality History
You know one of my most interestin pastimes is visiting historic sites/places. This weekend I saw two very interesting places.. been to both before but many years ago.
Yesterday spent an hour or so at Bonnechere Caves near Eganville. Very interesting to see underground limestone tunnels.
Today spent two hours at Fort Henry National Historic Site in Kingston. Fascinating to see how British troops and Canadian militia operated in mid 19th century. Could easily have spent 3 times as much time .. but had another commitment.
We are lucky having so many historic parks/places in Canada

Ideological-based Positions (cont,)
I again heard our current Prime Minister say that his government will never raise taxes. His government's belief that money is best left in people's wallets is a legitimate point of view. As I understand it, the belief is that money available for consumers to spent on goods and services; or to be saved/invested in financial institutions (who invariably invest the money to produce returns for the investors/savers), is better there than in the hands of a public authority like government.
But what if society wishes to re-distribute opportunity (or yes.. re-distribute incomes) to assist less fortunate people. A rigid belief in 'never raising taxes' precludes effective government/societal action to make change in our society. Even those adherents of never raising taxes to (some might say belatedly or reluctantly) do believe and adhere to policies to change society/economy through direct government actions....look at recent stimuluses packages world wide.

Canadians don't like ideologically -based parties
Several years ago I heard a insightful interview on CBC Radio. I wholeheartedly agree with the points made by the interviewee.
I think that parties perceived to be ideologically-based by Canadians won't have any long term electoral success. Canadians are a pragmatic lot who tend to want to do well but have no real strong views on many of the major philosophical issues which may divide our existing political parties.
For most of the past century the party most able to stay 'pragmatic'.. the federal Liberals, have been our 'naturally governing party'. On rare occasions our Conservative Party has managed to win one election or two; but then are turfed out.
I think the 2006 (Sponsorship scandal) and 2008 (The Green Shift) were aberrations. I think Canadian political landscape may very well revert to its usual shape after the next federal election. If Prime Minister Harper does win again it will be because Canadians will feel he has jettisoned his essentially hard nosed Conservative philosophy.

Disappointed
I have heard from a reliable lobby group that our Prime Minister is one of three G8 leaders blocking progress on climate change. I find this disppointing for our government to be taking this position.
Deep down I suspect many of our current federal government political leaders still have reservations about the seriousness of climate change. Nearly all reputable scientists and other professionals tell us we have to do something to reduce our impact on the climate.. yet certain opinion leaders (in public life and yes, on talk radio stations) still have their minds constrained by ideological 'hang ups'......

How It is Going
It's going well... just about 100% recovered from June 26 surgery....very occasional weakness in left hand last week.. none yet this week.
What's going on in China? Cannot people find a way to get along.
Really upset at racial incident in BC? Perpetrators of 'hate' crimes must receive the full brunt of the law and public opinion.....
what's with the weather in July 2009? Had to wear heavy jacket yesterday.. in July.. in Ottawa??

THoughts
What a sad story about those people who drowned when their car ended up in a lock of the Rideau Canal near Kingston Ontario. How horrible!!!
Saw something on a news channel about Sudan not willing to hand over its President to face war crimes charges. Not surprised at this but our world has to respect international law. We need some mechanism to hold perpretrators of grave human rights violations accountable for their actions.
Saw news item about report by Amnesty International on Israel-Hamas battles last winter. My own view is Amnesty has it 'right'. Both sides committed war crimes. Both sides must cease doing that!!!

History Show/Social Networking
Spent a very enjoyable Canada Day visiting a recreated 1866 village on the St. Lawrence River in eastern Ontario.
Best part was 1/2 or so entertainment based on travelling musical group in 1860's. Also one person played part of Sir John A MacDonald.. Canada's First Prime Minister. If you are ever in eastern Ontario the village is a good place to check out.
HOping today to get to a old friend's cottage.. although weather forecasts may be prolematic.
Have spent last week or so developing presence on twitter. What a wonderful way to stay in touch with busy people. Twitter seems not nearly as 'all encompassing' as is Facebook.... but the ability to send out information in less than 140 keystrokes fits in nicely in today's fast-paced world.

Great Music by a Great Orchestra
Feeling great today.. All seems close to normal...those who know me have sent wonderfully moving messages about my recent medical procedures. You know we humans need connectedness.. and I have it in spades.
Wanna chat a bit about what I am doing these days. On a part time basis I attempt to sell seasonal subscription packages for a great arts organization. Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra is a world class orchestra. As I understand it, the Orchestra is a medium sized orchestra.
It season beginning this fall is one of the best it has ever put together. If you ever get to the national capital area and they have a concert on you should try to take it in. And of course if you live in this area you may always get a phone call from me or one of my colleagues
(Just a different type of entry for this one time)

Taking It Easy Finishing Up
had a good post-procedure day yesterday... today hope to go at least to a headstone unveiling of a late friend who became one after being a tax client for several years. Really started appreciating her when she left me a heartwarming voice mail message a little over a year ago on the day of a test procedure.
Sadly she left this world last October....
Then may later off to see several residents of two long term care facilities one of whom may still be in a hospital.

It's Done
Well yesterday was a unique day in my life.
At the hospital a bit early.. first thing was the putting on of a 'halo'.. a round metal device.. on my head. The doctor freezes 4 (ended up being 6) tiny spots on my head (which hurt for a few seconds as he put in the 'freezing agent'. He then placed this 'halo' around my head. It sat somewhat lower than I thought it would.. there will be a photo on Facebook in next day or so.
Then I had CT scan which was ok.. only a few minutes long.
Then I was taken for my cerebral angiogram. That procedure in total lasted about one to one and a half hours.. but then there is a 4 hour period where one has to lie still and do virtually nothing. Frequent visits from nurses etc. to check on wound (the angiogram probe is inserted in groin and routed through your body to place where a tiny camera records 'photos').
After this very long wait they take you into a radiation room. After all the setting up they all leave the room and start the machine. I had four sessions.. all quite short.. suspect I was radiated for less than 15 minutes.
Then halo/hat was taken off, one last check by doctor and nurse and I was free to go home. A short bout of nausea delayed our departure but only for a few minutes.
Feel not too bad today but will be mostly 'taking it easy' this weekend.

Last Day
Just one more day with my 'untreated' condition. Tomorrow's 8 or so hours hospital visit will start the rest of my life (as does every day does it not??((:-))).
Got myself elected to the board of another organization this week... initial indications will have tons of emails to go through.. but that's ok... just have to repriorize time with other groups...

2 days to go
Getting closer to radial surgery.. still quite upbeat about it.. hope side effects are minimal...professionals have told me I should be able to resume normal activities the next day .. hope I can as we have invitations to lots of stuff happening this coming weekend.

4 Days to Go
No more tingling/numbness sensations last 24 hours which is good.. nevertheless their occurrence is challenging... so looking forward to procedure at end of this week....
Have visitation and funeral for an 'aunt in law' the middle of this week

Compassionate Heartwarming Stories
Just got back from storytelling session at our place of worship...two good friend - Palestinian and Israeli - who live in Ottawa, have published a book of stories about good side of Israeli-Palestinian relations. Heard some of their stories read out loud this morning...
I only wish all had such a good relationship.. we are all humans after all

5 Days to Go
Only five days until my radial surgery... glad it's getting closer.. on Thursday afternoon; Thursday evening; and early Friday morning.. had consecutive bouts of numbness/tingling in my left hand... at least one last longer than other recent episodes...I know that Friday's procedure may not end episodes completely but will be start of 'curing' process.
BTW I intend to have picture taken of my temporary headgear that day ((:-)).

Iran
The people united will never be defeated!!! Saw some TV images of clashes in Iran...I strongly hope for a more tolerant society in that part of the world
2 Real Heroes of Mine and So Many Others
We have lots of challenges in our society. But you know these pale in comparison to many other places in the world. I think of Burma where an opposition leader remains in detention nearly 20 years after winning a free election. The Burmese junta just doesn't get it!!! People all over the world are of one mind in asking that she be freed. Hat's off to that wonderful person on her 64th birthday.
And then we have the opposition supporters in Iran. Wow.. what a bunch of gutsy folks. Having the strength of character to publicly ask for changes in a flawed election. And publicly asking for changes even with fewer media present. THe government there not only doesn't like change but appears to want fewer international media to report on its reaction to the desire for change.
But over the long time the people will prevail...

Social Networking
I am a fan of social networking. A colleague of mine has 'challenged' me to set up a facebook group for the organization we both belong to.. I intend to take up the challenge..watch here for how it goes.
Hypocrisy of right wing radio hosts
The 'hypocrisy' of our conservative right wing radio in this town continues. I recently heard one of them 'venting' about the trial of our mayor on charges of influence peddling. The program host was saying if our mayor was found guilty then similar charges could be brought against a former Liberal Prime Minister for enticing MP's to cross the floor; or the three opposition party leaders for planning their coalition last fall. The program host conveniently forgets that our current Conservative Prime Minister has done the same thing.. he happens to forget the two floor crossings initiated by the current Prime Minister.
Of course that station never lets facts get in the way of an opinion.

Public Health/Safety Issue
Hey here in our community a local politician is asking that our public transit vehicles be equipped with sanitizers to reduce the spread of infections diseases. And he is being criticized for it by all the usual 'nay sayers'.
This should be a no-brainer. Anything in the interests of promoting definition seems to me to be a 'good thing'. Lots of initiatives in the past are initially roundly criticized by the same folks yet over time come to be accepted as normal situations in a socially responsible society/world!!

Friends in Cyberspace
close to 10 years ago I met a person via a listserv on Yahoo Groups. we have talked on the phone many times over htat period.. and emailed each other regularly.
In a little over one hour I will finally meet this gentleman.
when we first 'met' I was living in Saskatchewan.. he continues to live in Nova Scotia (on the west side). Today, my last day in Halifax before returning home, I will be having coffee with him.
Even though we have never physically met it seems like we have been friends forever.

The NIce Thing About Cyberspace
Over 1,000 km from home.. yet able to keep in touch with cyberspace and txt messaging...never really 'out of touch' with anyone...even if a close relative suddenly 'unfriended' me on Facebook ((:-))

Second Post Today
Only sort of enjoying meetings in Halifax.. Have been coming to AGM's of Amnesty International for several years. They are gatherings of human rights activists from across Canada.
The organization like so many others is undergoing constant change during these turbulent times...we seem to spend so much time at these meetings looking inward to how we are doing etc. etc.
I've been coming to these for 9 of the past 10 years.. doubt I'll be going to any future meetings.

Wonderful "Friends" I Have
Eight years ago I went to a week long study program in Cincinnati Ohio. All of us expressed the hope we would stay in touch. SOme of us went back there seven years ago and a handful of us attended a different program there some six years ago.
Through the wonders of 'cyberspace' we have kept in touch. We were from both Canada and the United States. OUr listserv (on yahoo) hasn't always been that active but every so often something is put on the listserv which brings out wonderful sentiments.
A few days ago I shared the latest update on my health situation.. the radial surgery on June 26. WOW .. did I get messages of support from all over the place.. from Indianapolis, Baltimore, Visalia California to name a few. All messages were extremely touching...they showed what friendship (even if primarily in cyberspace) can really mean. I am extremely gratified by these messages of love and support....

It's Set (continued_
have done and will do lots of reading about this upcoming radial surgery procedure....fascinating if occasionally upsetting stuff....
have prerequisite blood work and MRI about a week or so ahead of time...
meanwhile.. I see our governing federal party has started again using American style attack ads.. really hope they backfire....

It's Set
Got call the other day telling me radial surgery is Friday June 26th...looking forward to it with mixed anticipation.. on the one hand the procedure offers complete 'relief' from periodic numbness/tingling in left hand..on the other hand side effects may be annoying and a bit frightening... but have been assured medication can control/reduce unwanted side effects...
On balance glad it is earlier rather than later.....

Our Heath Care System Does Work
YOu know we hear lots of folks complaining about our health care system. But today I was exposed to a part that works quite well. I had a precautionary procedure for the third time in my life. Getting ready for it (had to have a liquid only diet for 24 hours) was the most difficult.
But it was scheduled very early in the morning and it went right as planned...we should not avoid precautionary procedures no matter how uncomfortable we may feel discussing them...

Back to Some Semblance of Normal
Made it through my sixth income tax preparation season...best yet.. but awfully tiring... was up many days before 6:00 AM and sometime working on returns past midnight....last few days have been sleep deprived.. but so it is with a seasonal business.
Still have some to finish but real pressure is over.............

Demonization .. again
I really get upset when one group of people 'demonize' others.. it bothers me we just cannot accept that others are just as important as we are...
You really hear about this on radio talk shows...most distressing.....
Why can't folks learn to get along in this world? We are all humans with hopes and aspirations. We don't have to agree with groups' tactics particularly if their acts are terrorist in nature. But there aer so often, thousands of civilans caught up in conflicts..when will we ever learn????

Tamils and Other Immigrants
I hear some right wing voices in our media questioning the value of multiculturalism in view of the recent events here in Ottawa.
you know these same voices were heard in Europe and other parts of the world ever since the 1930's. Xenophobia is a serious condition which our opinion leaders (including those on radio call in shows) must tread very carefully...hearing some of the phone calls on our talk radio station hereis frightening...

A Calmer Post
Who is one's best friend? Who can one share one's most exciting aspirations, dreams with? Who can one share in life's struggles as well as its joys?
I am a believer that one's spouse/partner has to be one's best friend. A person who knows you intimately in all meanings of that term. A person who can laugh with you and who can cry with you.
THis summer my best friend and I celebrate four decades (yes 40 years together). Isn't it wonderful two people can remain so close to each other after this long period of time....

Recente Stuff Invovling Tamils in our Town
Whole situation is troubling...horrible things seem to be going on in Sri Lanka...but 'TIgers' group seemed to be prototype of terrorist outfits given all I have heard about them (using child soldiers and suicide bombers).
As always there are so many innocents hurt by both sides in Sri Lanka's political conflict. My sense is most protesters this week were family members of innocent civilians..
And of course there was our right wing news talk radio show ranting all week about.. one of their hosts even compared a very reasonable statement by Ottawa Police Service to a manifesto by the Communist Party.. can you believe such a comparison....

Ramblings for Today
Hope the 'review' the Afghan government is doing leads to a total withdrawal of that awful law. International human rights standards must always trump 'cultural' practices.
See that a major grocery chain here is to charge 5 cents for customers wanting plastic bags. Such a move will discourage use of plastic and reduce plastics at landfills. Hey that sounds like a 'plastic bag' tax....and no one in our government or private sector is complaining about it...hmmm.. didn't many of these same folks cry out against the proposed carbon tax last fall...makes you wonder how 'hypocritical' some folks can be...
Lots of musings in our community about next mayoral campaign. Glad to see a major 'progressive' councillor is likely to run....

Awful Law Proposed in Afghanistan
If I hear the reports right, the current Afghanistan President is proposing/supporting a horribly retrogressive law on women's rights., Is this the same guy our government keeps saying is the one to support ... and for whom over 100 soldiers have died??
I was pleased to hear that even our more traditional political leaders cannot stomach the proposed law. May it never ever see light of day!!

Recent Events
Hey on balance I think Ontario budget is a good thing. Economy will work better with one consumption tax rather than two. My understanding is new items subjected to tax are those one already pays one tax on. I also think some of the 'pain' people may face will be alleviated by rebate cheques.. isn't that what GST credit payments are for in any event.
Of course the 'right wing' crowd in our province is all upset...whining about taxes again...but of course they don't mention it was a right-leaning government that brought in GST in first place... and they are first to vent if government doesn't provide a special service....their 'hypocrisy' never ceases to amaze me...

Symptomatic Solutions Don't Work
Hear that our ideologically-based government wants to end 2 for 1 jail time credit... while I believe many folks may abuse system I don't think this is solution. A proper functioning justice system would not encourage delays...
As always our local talk show station is beside itself in support of this initiative.

Newest 'Thing' from our Prime Minister
He's starting on one of his favourite issues.. gun registry...here we go again...
People using guns kill others....anything to make it more difficult to acquire weapons should be broadly supported...yet many folks believe people kill others not that guns kill... of course if guns were unavailable that would be one less weapon used to kill people...
you know.. some issues never cease to provoke disunity....

Public Broadcasting in Canada
You know we are seeing a continuing campaign by our more conservative elements in Canada about the future of our public broadcaster. Our government is upset the public broadcaster is financially in a bind and wants some extra help (I think it wasn't asking for money but rather a line of credit). A financially strong public broadcaster makes economic and social sense in our country.. but that's against an ideologically-driven government.

Again!
Hear on our local media that bus driver scheduling is back in controversy. Why is it that parties often try to achieve otherwise admirable ends by somewhat devious means???
In a 'previous' life I knew a lot of commercial vehicle drivers hours of service. I don't recall if there was evidence of transit bus driver fatigue as a contributing factor in motor vehicle collisions involving municipal transit buses.

Why in Canada??
Just heard on this morning's news a Canadian Ballet company has had to solicit funding from business sector in another country to make up for federal government grant cutbacks...such 'small minded' thinking seems to guide some of our national decision-makers...what a shame

Continual Challenge of Middle East Peace
I support a two state solution with agreed upon boundaries, Jerusalem likely the capital of both states, a border based on 1967 with agreed upon variations, and a just 'settlement' of claims of people displaced in earlier conflicts.
After 60+ years surely both Israelis and Palestinians should find a way to make real long lasting peace.

Shareholder Primacy Sometimes GOod Thing
Don't know too much about it but there are groups of mutual funds which make decisions on where to invest based on what I have heard call an 'ethical screen' where they don't invest in companies that pollute, discriminate, make weapons, aren't fair to employees etc.
In Canada a good place to start finding out more is www.socialinvestment.ca. A very interesting and informative site.....

It's Started (for me) Big Time
As indicated in an earlier blog I run a personal income tax return preparation service in Canada's National Capital area (although I do have clients from several other places in Canada).
The active 'season' runs from mid-February to end of April. Well it started with a 'bang' today...seven appointments with material for 10 returns.
But it's my most interesting time of the year..........................

Another Thing That 'Bugs' Me - Banks' Primary Stakeholders
Isn't it interesting that institutions such as our chartered banks are tightening up credit when consumers and small businesses need it the most. Weren't the chartered banks the ones who advertised encouraging people to borrow money? Did they not encourage people to acquire credit card?
Don't the banks also have lots of publications saying how wonderful they are to their customers? They also tell everyone who will listen that they are wonderful workplaces. A look at the diversity of their current workforce suggests that they have been good at developing a workforce that accurately (or at least partially so) reflects the diversity of the workforce in the early 21st century.
But you know if you look beyond the spin, and see how they are doing financially one finds the following:
1 Banks are generally still posting large profits despite the 'recession' for the rest of us.
2 The 'fine print' in most credit contracts still gives them the right to request immediate repayment of all outstanding credit
3 Many of the activities at 'customer appreciation' days are funded by local branch employees
In reality the primary bank stakeholders are the shareholders. Customers like ourselves as well as bank employees are no where near the top of bank executive's priorities. Bank public relations officials will disagree undoubtedly but when you compare bank lending and othe practicess, actions do speak lounder than words.
Our banking system is one of the healthiest in the world.... they do lots of good community and other activities. But we should remember that they do this in their corporate self interest...

Second Blog Today
Two Blogs in One Day.. Oh Oh....
Want to mention social networking... in particular Facebook. I think social networking is the 'wave' of the future. People developing and maintaining relationships is a good way to 'get things done'...I have joined many groups via that site lobbying for positive changes in society and how our respective levels of government deal with problems.
If you haven't tried it, hop over to facebook and have a look...all I tell folks is don't take EVERYTHING you see on facebook to be the 'gospel'

The Problem with Organized Religion
I am a practising liberal Reform Jew. I applaud all the various faiths in the world for what they each preach... all of them have 'sacred' text that urge all of us to do good things to other people.. in other words 'treat everyone nice'.
Yet throughout history there has been so much religious and other wars because adherents of one particular faith have demonized other faiths (see my earlier post on demonization).
I guess you can say the problem is not religion itself but some people who call themselves 'true believers' have done horrible things to people of other faiths throughout history.

Awful Radio Station Ads
Those of you in the National Capital region of Canada may have seen some horribly offensive and sexist ads for a new radio station. I have joined a social network site's action group to try to get these ads removed from both public and private property.
The ads are totally inappropriate in an age of increasingly greater recognition of gender equality issues.

Demonization
You know it seems that many of the problems in the world today (and throughout history) are caused by demonization. If one thinks of major human rights violations in the 20th and 21st centuries (and likely many centuries earlier), much of it originated by the perpetrating group being subjected to 'demonization' of the group who would become victims of human rights violations.
Horrible genocides have resulted from extreme demonization.
This is one reason why I find it very difficult to 'tolerate' or 'accept' comments that even remotely hint of demonization of others. One thing that I think prevents real progress for 'peace' in the Middle East, for example, is statements by various political/educational/religious leaders that demonize another group. But the MIddle East is not unique. Look at what happened in Europe in the Nazi period; Rwanda in 1994; Sri Lanka right now; Zimbabwe; Balkans in the 1990's etc. etc.

Another thing that 'bugs' me
How come in my community when there is freezing rain (or other bad weather) our school boards, in the interest of safety of students, cancel school bus transportation? This means parents have to make other arrangements to get students to school.
Presumably if the roads are unsafe for school buses, they are unsafe for smaller vehicles such as cars. Yet in almost all cases where buses are cancelled, the boards announce that schools are 'open'.
In a part of the world where weather can be problematic at some times of the year, I wonder how to resolve this one... unsure how but it does 'bug' me....

A Positive Item
The Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council has 'reprimanded' a particularly opinionated talk show host on our talk radio station for making serious anti-Islamic remarks on a recent show.
It was wonderful to see the Council issue a strong statement criticizing this host's attitude towards people who disagree with him.. this is the host I was talking about in an earlier blog.

Another thing that 'bugs' me
Not all witnesses have spoken but news reports out of that inquiry in British Columbia regarding the tasering and death of that Polish man at Vancouver airport, are quite upsetting to me and I'm sure many others. Just heard today one witness said no police officer applied first aid when the man was in distress. Clearly something went terribly wrong that day.....

What 'Bugs' Me??
I have lots of things that 'bug' me.. here is one (others to follow in different times in different blogs)
Our country's treatment of Omar Khadr. We are the only western country not to repatriate our citizens from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The current government line in this issue is flawed from the start.
Other child soldiers have been and can be 'rehabilitated'.. why not apply the same standards to Mr. Khadr?
It's not his views that count.. it's basic fairness.

Talk Radio Station Bias (cont.)
Further to my earlier rant.... one of this station's talk show hosts seems to have found a new law in this country. When he hears a view that he strongly disgrees with he just hangs up the phone. Seems like he thinks there is a law prohibiting some people from disagreeing with him.
Of course everyone knows there is no such a law... but such is talk radio....

Credit Card Interest Rates
With lending rates of large financial institutions so low these days, it is horrible that banks and other credit card issuers charge such high interest rates. They have for years encouraged folks to use credit cards (sometimes with short term low interest rates) and then 'jack up' their rates... some to over 28%. Awful!!!

Sharing Health challenges
Another blogger raises this issue in a recent post. I have thought lots about this.
My own view is sharing is helpful. Others who then know challenges one is going through are able to provide whatever support they feel comfortable with. I know relatives who never share anything (and they wonder why no one likes to spend time with them....).
I really don't know how people who don't share manage to 'live with themselves' ((:-))

Canadian Politics Today
Just saw 3 party house leaders on tv looking forward to resumption of parliament and upcoming federal budget... it may be case of 'here we go again'.. or real effort to do something with our economy. Party egos seem so overwhelming.. here's hoping...
