Recent Events

Hey on balance I think Ontario budget is a good thing. Economy will work better with one consumption tax rather than two. My understanding is new items subjected to tax are those one already pays one tax on. I also think some of the 'pain' people may face will be alleviated by rebate cheques.. isn't that what GST credit payments are for in any event.

Of course the 'right wing' crowd in our province is all upset...whining about taxes again...but of course they don't mention it was a right-leaning government that brought in GST in first place... and they are first to vent if government doesn't provide a special service....their 'hypocrisy' never ceases to amaze me...

Symptomatic Solutions Don't Work

Hear that our ideologically-based government wants to end 2 for 1 jail time credit... while I believe many folks may abuse system I don't think this is solution. A proper functioning justice system would not encourage delays...

As always our local talk show station is beside itself in support of this initiative.

Newest 'Thing' from our Prime Minister

He's starting on one of his favourite issues.. gun registry...here we go again...

People using guns kill others....anything to make it more difficult to acquire weapons should be broadly supported...yet many folks believe people kill others not that guns kill... of course if guns were unavailable that would be one less weapon used to kill people...

you know.. some issues never cease to provoke disunity....

Public Broadcasting in Canada

You know we are seeing a continuing campaign by our more conservative elements in Canada about the future of our public broadcaster. Our government is upset the public broadcaster is financially in a bind and wants some extra help (I think it wasn't asking for money but rather a line of credit). A financially strong public broadcaster makes economic and social sense in our country.. but that's against an ideologically-driven government.

Again!

Hear on our local media that bus driver scheduling is back in controversy. Why is it that parties often try to achieve otherwise admirable ends by somewhat devious means???

In a 'previous' life I knew a lot of commercial vehicle drivers hours of service. I don't recall if there was evidence of transit bus driver fatigue as a contributing factor in motor vehicle collisions involving municipal transit buses.

Why in Canada??

Just heard on this morning's news a Canadian Ballet company has had to solicit funding from business sector in another country to make up for federal government grant cutbacks...such 'small minded' thinking seems to guide some of our national decision-makers...what a shame
