2010 Year End blog

2010 was a year characterized by CHANGE. More changes happened in 2010 than has happened in our lives for a long, long time.

The most significant was our decision in February to relocate (in June) from Ottawa Ontario to Regina Saskatchewan.

Carol

She completed her term as a director of the Ontario Genealogical Society. She hopes to attend the 2012 OGS conference in Kingston. She also continued her post-secondary program of study, which may lead to a designation as a professional genealogist.

Since our relocation in June she has been extremely busy with regular caregiving for our youngest grandchild, Cairo. He reminds us of how exhausting it can be dealing with a youngster in the 6 to 12 months age range.

Dave

Dave’s income tax preparation business had a very successful 7th year of operation. He will operate it from our new Saskatchewan location.

He continued to work ‘out of tax season’ for the Canadian Diabetes Association – this time in Regina, and a few weeks telemarketing for the National Arts Centre Foundation.

His completed his volunteer work in the synagogues in Ottawa and Kingston, and finished up a 4 ½ year term as a member of the City of Ottawa’s Advisory Committee on Equity and Diversity.

Family

Heather was very busy with raising Cairo. She found it a very exciting, if not exhausting, to deal with the ‘trials’ and ‘tribulations’ of a small child. She continued her studies at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology. She and her boyfriend began to develop an online distribution system for antique and Aboriginal artefacts.

Trey, who is almost 13, continued his schooling in the year and to be an active participant on the world’s largest social network – facebook. He also was able to start using a cell phone for his social communication.

Giovanni, who is now 8 changed schools in 2010. He now attends a school very close to where we live and eats his lunch at our place on school days. The critical illness of his Dad is the reason for the relocation to Regina this year.

Dayvan, who is 7, still lives on Little Pine First Nation. We hear occasionally of his continued good life.

December 25, 2010

Well today is December 25 aka Christmas Day.. a Christian holiday that is a full fledged statutory holiday when most of our country 'shuts' down. But it gives all of us who choose not to celebrate that holiday to do lots of 'catch up' stuff. A nice thing about December 25 is its proximity to the end of the year. I know I am taking this year's down time to do lots of clean up on my computer system.

I also recently decided to move to Windows 7 and this time gives me an opportunity to learn how to use it.

Also those of you on facebook will know I have also moved my email services to the 'cloud'. I will no longer have to worry about saving important messages. Gmail does it for me ((:-))

This 'downtime' allows me (and many others I am sure) to look back on this year. What a year it has been....so many changes in our lives both at a 'macro' and 'micro' level. Once again we will be sending out a year end letter. I suspect I will post it here as well.

As we come closer to 2011 I know for sure there will be one election to come. Residents in Saskatchewan know election day is November 7. It wil be interesting to see if a federal election occurs in 2011. I really hope it does but suspect all federal parties will attempt to find a way to avoid one (especially if any of them think their standing after an election could be 'worse off' than now).

Back to a personal perspective I don't see how 2011 can be as full of changes in my life as was 2010.. but then one can never tell.......

December in Saskatchewan

Hey it's cold here.. but then that is the reality of the prairies in winter...and the view that it is a 'dry cold' actually has lots of legitimacy. Was commenting other day how even though it was -20ish before windchill, if one dressed for weather, one could move around on foot or by car and feel all right.....

Last post I talked about celebrations. We have a nice Chanukah get together a few days ago...lots of camaderie but mostly lots of food.

We have two birthdays coming up which will be full of fun and 'food'. Oh yes and given the festive season we are all into, there will be lots of food as well.

Am beginning to 'worry' (although how much good it will do is open to question) about what will happen in our national political arena in 2011. I see some inklings we may get that long sought federal election after all. The polls however have a worrisome trend.. I have seen some saying the current government may get its majority or at least a strong minority. I can only hope that Canadians understand the impact of giving our current Prime Minister his majority.

The official opposition has been disappointing of late. The turnabout on Afghanistan seems to have been unexpected. The NDP and Bloc continue to in their own ways to carry on...wanting to oppose the government but both seemingly going nowhere.

There seems to be some 'interesting' movement by the Green party. Gee I really hope they elect an MP somewhere in the next election.

Various stuff again

It's been over a week since I last posted. Took a few days to catch up after being away for over two weeks.. but things back to normal.

We're into a month of celebrations here and not one of them is Christmas. Tonight is the first night of Chanukah and on Friday we're hosting a Chanukah party/dinner for family and a couple of new close friends. Later on this month two of our grandchildren celebrate birthdays. We will likely arrange special events for both of them.

As my foot injury has healed i am now back to delivering papers early in the mornings..but fewer routes now as the cold snowy weather means it takes much longer to deliver the papers.

Well what about Wikileaks... I have given it considerable thought and I think my view is summed up by the following short phrase "Yea Wikileaks". Political and bureaucratic leaders need to be accountable for their actions as well as their words. I suspect many things labelled 'secret' or 'confidential' in this world are so marked on for the convenience of political and bureaucratic leaders.

Everyone involved in fields like diplomacy should learn to operate on the assumption that what they put on paper will somehow find its way into the media.

Hilary Clinto need not resign. If she initiated 'spying' on other leaders all she should do is issue an apology and 'carry on'.

Sort of analagous to the situation where embassies often have military attaches as part of their staff. Military attaches seem to be type of people who assess military readiness and capabilities of host countries.. sounds like spying to me.

Home Sweet Home

Today I return home from Ottawa to my home.. Regina Saskatchewan. Lots happened while I was away. I spent the last 16 days primarily with my ailing mother. I was very glad to see her discharged from Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus a week ago. Her condition seems to have stabilized. I only hope we have a chance to celebrate a significant birthday next summer. But who knows what will happen.

As indicated in an earlier post I was able to do business while in Ottawa. While here I added to my client base. I have up to 2 new Ottawa-resident clients and my first client resident in Manitoba. Next tax season I will have clients in all provinces other than in Atlantic Canada. I am quite pleased with adding a new province to my 'repertoire' of client locations.

I was also able to sell several cash calendars for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

I look forward (despite temperatures being 25 degrees colder) being back in Regina.

Thursday Blogging in Ottawa

My parent is back at her nursing home. Seems to be feeling better all the time....

Have been able to work on some tax / bookkeeping stuff while here. Had an important discussion with a corporate client last week. Have prepared the client's first ever payroll. Quite an educational/learning experience.

Also met a new personal income tax client last evening in Ottawa. For next several days will be having a meal with different clients who have become friends. In my kind of operation this is a frequent happening. Earlier this week had a nice meal with a fascinating couple who I first met on facebook.

Weather here in Ottawa has been quite pleasant for the first half of November. On the other hand lots of snow and wind in home base in Regina.

We selected this weekend to be in Ottawa as we have been invited to a wedding of a young couple we got to know very well this past year. Regrettably my spouse is not joining me in Ottawa after all.

Ottawa Musings

Have been in Ottawa now for a week. Things seem to be turning around for parent who may be able to go home this week.

Had a wonderfully mixed day on Saturday. Early in the day saw a tweet from Elizabeth May - leader of Canada's Green Party - about a 4 PM debate with Ezra Levant. Thought it would be great to attend as the subject matter was our oil sands.

Regrettably found out that the debate was part of a conference. Admission to the session that included the debate was $37. Opted not to spend that kind of money (which I don't really have). Instead spent time with a client who is also a friend in Ottawa. That client also connected me with another person who may become a client of my income tax preparation business.

Later on last night saw a neighbour who I had grown up with in the 1950's and 1960's whom I had not seen for 40 years. A wonderful time of reminiscing and catching up on 40 years. She had come to Ottawa to visit my parent. It was really great seeing this woman (including meeting her adult child).

Today I am to see a person who was a neighbour of our last residence in Ottawa

Variety of Stuff

Spending my fifth day here in Ottawa.... parent's condition is stable....filial duties are important in one's life and I have welcomed the opportunity to perform them.

I have also been 'touched' by many comments both on facebook and elsewhere wishing us well in this current medical challenges.

Have also been able to carry on my out of season bookkeeping work even though away from home base. Have also sold some cash calendars for the Canadian Mental Health Association (Sask. Division).

Two people in particular have been most helpfulf. One has hosted me the last several nighs. The other picked me up at the airport and brought me to the hospital when I arrived. This person has also expressed regular interest in helping out.

Had wonderful vegetable stir fry at friend (and client 's) place last night.

the important issues in life

Well in a lifetime one always has challenges to overcome. Some are minor in nature some are much more significant.

Having a parent approach the 'end of life' condition is always a 'pain' to observe. One feels bad when one seees a role model become a shadow of a previous self. One recalls the wonderful times/conversations/experiences etc. one has had with a parent. Our parents teach us so much about life not only in an 'intellectual sense' but also a spiritual or moral sense.

Some of you know that tomorrow - November 7 - I am travelling to be with an aging parent who is hospital with pneumonia. The attending physician has asked that I be physically closer to this aging parent. It's trite to say that I have known this parent for all my life (isn't that true of all of us). But when you think of it, your relationship with a parent is the first relationship any of us had. True a relationship may change in nature over the years. But a parent or guardian is such a foundation relationship that we all have.

Those of you who know me will know I tend to be social activist. I have been active in political organizations, human rights groups, public safety organizations, multifaith groups, synagogues etc. Involvement in groups tends to be in my 'DNA'. And we all know where we get our DNA. The parent with whom I hope to be spending time with in the next few days is the source of my 'DNA' in terms of social activism. I hope to be able to 'handle' the next few days with the same level of 'straight forwardness' that I know this parent would have handled it and want me to handle it.

You know about an hour ago I received a SMS message from our grown daughter. Very short and to the point. "Family is all that matters"

Not a truer statement than that....

Varia

Gee lots of stuff going on but sometimes too busy to post....

Got a new corporate client who has asked me to do just about all their bookkeeping duties... will be an opportunity to get more experience in the inner workings of a small incorporation. Should also help with cash flow in my really 'seasonal' business during the 'off season;.

My second foot injury is almost competely healed. Re-starting my newspaper carrier job in three days.. but at a much reduced level than before. (I was glad to miss the brief winter interlude of ten days ago but that interlude has made me rethink how much I should be doing this type of job given my history in 2010 - the year of the falls and injuries).

We have had a fascinating week in federal politics in Canada. Heard a media report that Wall and Harper had a faceoff and Harper blinked. Our federal authorities also stopped a mining project in British Columbia to prevent environmental damage. What is happening? Maybe our 'hard right' government realizes they cannot win any more by acting as ideologues. Hoping that they are trying to slowly move back to the centre may be wishful thinking for anyone given the history of the 'leader' and other 'big guns' in that gang but who knows what will happen.

The past few weeks have been very busy with 'grandchildren' duties. We can confirm that looking after a 10 month old gentleman is one of the busiest most exhausting duties one can have. Gee he's always keeping us on our toes.. cute but a bundle.....

Enjoying continuing warm weather here on the Prairies... Forecast is 18 today.

Priorities of Politicians

I am quite disappointed with results of vote today in Parliament on Bill C-300, a private members' bill relating to corporate social responsibility. The concern relates to actions of Canadian extractive industries in developing countries.

As I understand it the bill would have strengthened a company's obligation to respect human rights obligations in its work. The bill would have established an effective complaint/investigation mechanism for dealing with this obligation.

But alas a majority of those MP's voting decided the inconvenience this may cause some companies was more important than international human rights obligations. I am most disappointed that some Liberal MP's did not vote for the bill even though the opposition has a majority of MP's in the present house.

I was very impressed with the arguments in support of the bill.

2nd Time Around and Politics this week

Well my injured foot is not as bad as last time.. only a small broken/fractured bone on the right side...don't need any cast other than air cast I purchased last time...

Have been getting by.. and getting chance to sleep in as I am temporarily not delivering newspapers.

What a week we've had in Canada on the international scene. Two bungled items courtesy of our federal government. Failure to win a seat on the Security Council (and its aftermath) are classic Harperite. Upset everyone by taking positions known to be unacceptable to many in the international community; and then blame someone else for the results. Also messed up negotiations with another country and be embarassed when it blows up in your face.

On another matter, I had nice discussion with my local MP on a private member's bill to strengthen corporate accountability for Canadian extraction companies working in developing countries. While the MP and I did not see fully 'eye to eye' on the issue he had some interesting comments to make. He did indicate his support for the principle of accountability. Such a difference between meeting this MP (an opposition MP) and one of the government MP's.

Of course both of us agreed that in the current cirumstances in our federal political arena, it doesn't matter what any individual MP (except one) think about any issue. Other than the freelancing MP Mr. Bernier, our government's decisions on all issues are centred in one MP's office.

When oh when will we Canadians get a chance to change all this??

Vareity of stuff

For those who are friends on facebook or follow me on Twitter will know that once again I am 'laid up' temporarily with a foot injury. Early Saturday morning I 'tripped' on some wood laid out on a newspaper subscriber's sidewalk and fell down. I immediately felt a sore in the same foot, that had a broken ankle several months ago.

Two hours in the hospital resulted in my hearing that, yes, one small bone was broken. The day after tomorrow I am to be fitted with a cast at a cast clinic. I will be wearing some type of cast for from 4 to 6 weeks.

I have had to take 'leave' from my newspaper carrier activity for that time.....

So I will be far less 'active' in a real sense the next little while. But I am not upset as it makes no sense being upset at something one cannot change.

The shenanigans involving our current federal government never cease to amaze me. I only hope that sooner rather than later Canadians will get a chance to pass judgement on the current crowd.

In the meantime my 'less active' time means I can watch the baseball playoffs. I am definitely a member of the 'Anybody but the Yankees' crowd. I also don't particularly care for the Atlanta Braves as they have a 'racist' symbol their crowd uses to cheer them on. I would be happy especially if a team like the Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, or the San Francisco Giants win the World Series.

Various Stuff

Those who follow me on Twitter will recall a recent tweet about family issues...lots of stuff the past few days dealing with adult child and 3 of our 4 grandsons. I had forgotten how 'tiring' all this family stuff can be.. but isn't that to be expected with family. As we have done for the last 30 years we find ourselves frequently second guessing decisions. But that's life isn't it.

Seen some media stuff on new book on government of Stephen Harper. Will have to read it when it becomes available in a library near us.

Will there or will there not be a federal election this fall...more and more difficult to say.. but personally I hope there is one.....

Still busy delivering newspapers; telerecruiting for canadian diabetes association; and selling cash calendars..please contact me at dave.abbey@sasktel.net... you could win $20,000 next Valentine's Day.

Short and Sweet Today

Been busy so blog entries less often and this one will be short.

Private type matter successfully dealt with yesterday. Examination revealed all is ok.

Also I am happy census decision is again 'in the news'. The more it is discussed by all and assunder the more people will realize the sheer 'stupidity' of the decision to end the long form census. Let's hope public pressure will continue to build.

Public and Private Stuff

Well I for one am glad to see the gun registry survive. What is most 'heartening' was to see that those who supported the continuation of the registry seemed to all be saying it needed to be fixed. Rather than abolish it, they argue let's discuss how it can be made better. Truly a 'Canadian' solution. A solution based on men and women calmly reviewing its operation and finding ways to make it more acceptable to hunters, trappers, Aboriginal folks, and other rural people.

Really unfortunate that those who lost today don't wish to 'compromise'. Rather they wish to make this (along with others) a so-called 'wedge' issue. Canadian voters need to have a chance to say loud and clear which type of issue approach they prefer. Bring on the federal election to allow us to decide we have had enough of ideological-based public policy.

Switching gears totally, had a recent annual physical. One result is I am having a new procedure early next week. The professionals have decided to do an examination of another part of my anatomy - the bladder. From reading what I can the procedure is relatively easy to take and fortunately, requires no advanced preparation.

Saturday September 18

Followups on variety of topics today.

In my last post I said Jack Layton was wrong on the long gun registry. I now realize I may have spoken 'prematurely'. Am very glad to see his idea of 'compromise' on registry has support of vast majority of his caucus. If all signs are right, the ideologues running our government will be defeated in next Wednesday's vote on the registry. I hope all members of the Liberal and Bloc Quebecois caucus vote as predicted as will most NDP members so the registry will continue. The police community should be pleased too and they are the most affected by the registry's presence.

I have heard repeated comments that 'nobody wants a (federal) election'. Many months ago I said I did. Elections are the highest marking of a viable democracy. I do hear some people saying maybe it is time to have election. I can only echo that and say 'bring it on'.

Fully engaged in life in the great province of Saskatchewan. Having lots of contact with adult child and most of our growing group of grandsons. One sometimes forgets how 'tiring' it can be to spend time with babies. Our nearly 9 month old grandson is now finding out how to get into lots of things that can hurt him... time for 'babyproofing' lots of our townhouse. Our nearly 8 year (the one with the very ill parent) is now at a school in our area. Our adolescent just the wonderful experience of attending a concert featuring one Jusin Bieber.

Still working for the Canadian Diabetes Association in Regina telerecruiting canvassers for an early November canvass. Still delivering newspapers at an 'ungodly' time (5 AM to 7 AM) in the mornings six days a week (:-)). Also still selling Canadian Mental Health Association (Sask. Division) cash calendars. In a few weeks I may start another job - driving a van of school children to and from school five days a week.

Switching back to federal politics I see that some are musing about improving decorum of the House of Commons. Improving decorum would be good but am unsure if any of the current 'players' have the skills to make this happen. I guess only time will tell.

Various stuff

Lots of topics to 'muse' about. Gun registry is first. Don't always agree with Liberals in the past but this time Michael Ignatieff has it right. In past have ususally agreed with NDP but this time Jack Layton has it wrong.

All people in Canada in positions to know or work with gun registry seem to me to be saying it is worth keeping.. oh I did leave out one group - our ideologically/wedge driving federal government. The gun registry is a wedge issue for the Tories. But New Democrats who long pride themselves on being principled politicians are showing (in some cases) that they are just like other parties. Like many others I was most proud of their words during the War Measures Act 40 years ago... during the debates on terrorism legislation etc. etc.

The vote on september 22 is ostensibly on a private members bill.. but we know the content is certainly not a private members type of bill. I hope enough NDP members vote for the Liberal motion to save the registry by not proceeding with the private member's bill.

Hmm.. a caucus revolt against supporting professional sports franchises. Hear hear for the revolters ((:-)). Public funds should not support professional sports franchises until we reach a stage where food banks are gone as no one is hungry in our society; waiting lists for surgeries and other medical procedures no longer exists; and post-secondary education is available to all regardless of ability to pay; and poverty has ceased to exists in our society.
On this issue (alone) I find myself in agreement with the likes of Maxime Bernier (ouch!!)

Still hoping some of you consider purchasing a Canadian Mental Health Association (Saskatchewan Division) cash calendar. Check out their wonderful work at www.cmhask.com

Thursday Morning Ideas

Interesting to see our federal election prospects raised in light of latest EKSO poll. Also to hear Liberals invite NDP/Green supporters to vote Liberal to defeat Stephen Harper.

Under our system there will be 308 contests in the next election. If Canadians vote strategically (which I believe they should do in the next election) then where the Liberal candidate has the best chance of beating a Conservative, then yes NDP and Green supporters should seriously consider voting Liberal. BUT a belief in strategic voting means where the NDP stands the best chance of beating a Conservative, then Lib/Green supporters should seriously consider voting NDP. And if there is a Green candidate who has the best chance to beat a Conservative, Libearl/NDP suporters should seriously consider voting Green. This all seems to make sense to me but I worry this will not happen in all cases. All the current opposition parties should publicly declare they will respect results of any upcoming election and should a 'minority' or 'hung' Parliament result, they will seek out other parties' co-operation.

The next federal election cannot come soon enough!!

Heard this morning the TD Bank reported $1.81 billion in net income in its most recent quarter. It seems to continue to do very well thank you very much. But sort of makes one wonder whose interest they serve. We see all the 'banking can be this comfortable' ads apparently directed at customers. But are they directed at customers for customers' sake or for their shareholders.

That bank (I am sure others do too) have things like 'customer appreciation' days where they offer coffee and cake to customers. Given their huge profit margins why don't they really show customer appreciation and have 'service fee free days'. Say they pick a day when for 24 hours any transaction normally charged a fee, will be done at no charge for that day. That would REALLY show 'customer appreciation' but of course it would 'cut' in their bottom line. A financial institution that did this in Canada would, in my view, attract a lot of new customers (yours truly included).

Various Stuff

Another wet day in southern Saskatchewan. I guess that is nothing new in 2010.

We' ve had an uneventful week on one hand but lots of others things have been rather exceptional. We moved back to Saskatchewan for family reasons and did they come in 'spades' this week. We dealt with issues involving our grandson whose father is very ill. The grandson is going to a school in our neighbourhood so we were (and still are) very engaged in issues around the beginning of the school year.

Those similar issues meant 'quality time' with our oldest grandson.. a typical 12 year old.. with whom we don't spend nearly the time we would like to but understand how important his friends are at this stage in his life. But since we've been here we do spend some quality time. As he was looking for ways to spend his time more productively I am pleased to indicate he and one of his buddies are now self-employed business people - deliverying flyers 3 days a week.

And we have spent lots of time (some unplanned due to variations in his mother's schedule) with our youngest grandchild... all of 8 months old...and enjoying using his newest skill - crawling. Having to begin 'child proofing' our home I guess.

Outside of family stuff will want to see how the 'terrorism case' based in Ottawa turns out. Very heartened by attitude of Muslim leaders who have been reaching out to other Canadians since the arrests.

Very supportive of any group's efforts to promote interfaith understanding. If I was a US resident I would applaud efforts in New York City to enhance a better understanding of Islam demonstrated by the proposed Centre. I know some folks feel the move is an 'attack' on the memories of victims of the 911 tragedy.

Like just about everyone else I condemn the events of 911. But let's not give the perpetrators of those horrible events any satisfaction by giving in to anti-Islam feelings which the events were designed to create.

Sunday in Late August Varia

Well working away (or more properly resting away) on a wet Sunday in Regina. It rained earlier today..something we are supposed to seldom get in Saskatchewan... but this has been no ordinary summer.

Weatherwise it has rained often in dry Saskatchewan. I understand it has also rained all over the country. It's been hot in some places so I think we'll all remember summer of 2010. Most folks will understand a contributing factor will be what is called 'climate change'. Regrettably certain right wing ideologues will continue on the path of climate change denial.

Sun Media, radio talk show hosts, and to a certain extent our own federal government are in the latter group. I fully expect some of them to continue to deny climate change. Warmer temperatures, and more unstable weather notwithstanding, they will continue to deny the impact of human activity on our environment. They are surely continuing to be three of the most out of touch groups in today's world.

Sun Media seems to be evolving as a public relations arm of our federal government. Radio talk show hosts for the most part seem like lone wolves. But our federal government has the 'tools of power' constrained only by our constitution and the fact this parliament is a minority parliament.

I believe most Canadians find the current federal government to be operating contrary to their our collective interest. Whenever the next election comes, Canadians will finally be able to 'settle scores' for all the various decisions made since February 2006. The election cannot come soon enough.

Seems like in the next few days another Commonwealth country will have a coalition government. That will make two significant countries - the UK and Australia-living with coalitions running their countries.. and you know, the sky won't be falling down after all. Maybe something we should try in Canada.

On a totally different matter, I hope the forthcoming Israeli-Palestinian peace talks will move the peace agenda forward. Whether it be 43 or 62 years in length, this conflict has gone on too darn long. The majority of both sides desperately want peace and we will see if their respective leaders have the political strength to pull it off....their record suggests one should be pessimistic that they can accomplish this but then one never knows....

This coming week sees us attending an important discussion about our son-in-law's overall health and the future of our neary 8 year old grandson.

Somtimes the more they change the more they stay the same

For the last five years in Ottawa, every September I worked for the Canadian Diabetes Association as a 'telerecruiter' of canvassers for their month long campaign in November.

Well for the past two nights and for the next nine weeks I will be working for the Canadian Diabetes Association as a 'telecrecruiter' of canvassers for their 10 day long campaign in November.

Interesting to compare the two efforts - both the telecrecruiting and the campaign itself. In Ottawa a team of 5 was trying to find 300 canvassers. By contrast in Saskatchewan up to 11 on a team is trying to find several times that amount. In Ottawa the effort was concentrated on parts of the city which were most funds were raised. Here in Regina they are recruiting cavassers for the campaign throughout southern Saskatchewan.

In Ottawa the team was small enough that for most nights the past three years one of the team members (moi) acted as a first line supervisor. With only a few exceptions the staff person did not stay for the shift unless I was unavalable to work that night. Here the staff person does stay all the time.

But the two efforts are equally dedicated and directed to raising funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association - a critical non-government organization fighting diabetes in Canada. I have heard there may be one million people in this country with undiagnosed diabetes. That is a frightening statistic. We must increase public awareness of the condition and its treatment.

The Time Has Come - Bring it (an election) on!

Just read over Alex Neve of Amnesty International's blog from the Omar Khadr trial in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. What a horrible miscarriage of justice. Mr. Khadr is a child soldier charged for criminal activity which occurred when he was 15 years old. He has been subject to continuous human rights deprivation for over 8 years. He has been tortured and mistreated.

Yet our government - the protectors of our democracy - refuse to repatriate him. You know most Canadians totally disagree with Mr. Khadr's philosophy. But I believe most Canadians know the in our country all Canadian citizens (and residents) are equal before the law regardless of how problematic/objectionable their views may be. I am ashamed our government hasn't done for Mr. Khadr what it has done for many other Canadians.

Our current federal government's treatment of Mr. Khadr, the decision it made on the long form census, its 'complaints' about employment equity programs in practice, its spending huge extravagant amounts on summits including the so-called 'fake lake', its squandering a long time public finance surplus (thereby depriving it and future governments of the ability to make strategic investments), it's turning its back on many disadvantaged groups in Canada, its so-called 'tough on crime' approach which totally ignores the reality of decreased criminal activity, and its rejection of even police chiefs views on gun control.. all this mean the time has come.

Our federal opposition parties must use the upcoming parliamentary session to combine forces and bring on the election. Canadians need this chance to make changes in our federal government politicians and policies.

Canadian Mental Health Association (Sk Division) Cash Calendar Fundraisers

Those of you who know me on facebook know I have become a seller of cash calendars as of today. This fundraiser supports the good work of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Saskatchewan division. Their website is www.cmhask.com.

A cash calendar is a raffle type fundraiser. These calendars are sold for $35 each. At the end of each month the association draws one ticket for each day of the month. The calendars have prize amounts (or in some cases prize stuff) listed on each day.

Most of the days in 2011 on the cash calendar have $100 on their date. A few have art work. Five have $1000. February 14 has $20,000.

You can contact me via dga.sask@gmail.com if you are interested.

Other that things are 'carrying on'..

Carrying On in Regina

Well keeping myself busy (and out of trouble some might say) by doing various stuff. As most readers know I run an income tax preparation business. Even though it is out of season I do have a number of client files that are definitely 'open' at this time. It's good to have some work in the 'offseason'.

Also as many of you know I have resumed work that I did in Regina delivering newspapers early in the morning. After this long weekend I will be the regular carrier on three routes. It does make a long day (starting at 4 AM) but with appropriate or should I say proper rests and a bit earlier to bed in the evenings I should be ok.

Well I am happy to say that two activities aren't enough ((:-)). Starting this week I will be a 'commission' salesperson for the provincial mental health association. They have a fundraising project with 'cash calendars'. Every day in 2011 one purchaser will win a prize. Most of the time a nominal amount of money but on a few occasions a much larger amount. (Actually a few times the prize is artwork). I am looking forward to doing this activity as it supports a very worthwhile cause.

Those of you read this blog either here or more likely on facebook can expect (in many cases) a request that you consider a cash calendar if not for yourselves, as a gift to someone special as we move closer to the end of this year.

I am also looking forward to next week's 41st anniversary of my legal relationship with my best friend...readers will remember who that is from last summer's entries in this blog.

Census Still - Exchange with Friend

I have been posting lots of articles on the census controversy .. mostly from Globe and Mail - onto my facebook profile.

A good friend asked about my continuing concern over the issue. I indicated I was as the government's decision goes against so much of what I believe in. Canadians like to have government decisions based on analyses of problems and recommended solutions. They don't want decisions based on ideological biases alone.

Regrettably our current federal government appears on this course. While we can find examples where they did undertake rigourous analysis of facts, there are now so many areas of public policy where the guiding principle of our federal government is 'Never mind the facts...and don't let them interfere with my opinion'

Various

So yesterday our National Statistics Council put forward a proposal to break the impasse/end the controversy over the census. Did our government move to 'cool the passions' by considering it.. well not apparently. The Minister stuck to his 'guns' so to speak at the parliamentary committee meeting.

Such a shame to see more ideologically-based policies coming from this government. An election may be what Canadians need to straighten folks out....

On a personal front still getting up awfully early in the morning but enjoy the physical effort.. and getting paid to boot. Six days a week I deliver 80-90 newspapers. I do miss the 'human contact' now that all customers prepay their paper. But it is certainly a relief not to have to 'collect' from anyone.

Have another business opportunity in the works. A major charity in this part of the world sells what are called 'cash calendars'. They provide commission to individuals and groups who sell calendars for them. I may become one of those sellers in next day or so.

The world (and life) goes in circles. Just today I found out a close family friend is in her final days in Ottawa. It's a woman I have know since very early childhood. I had just finished reading a long blog-type entry from her daughter when (on facebook) I had a beep from a new friend asking me if I still did taxes for a living. Later on today I met with her and her spouse to do their tax returns. The timing was so 'interesting'.. readig about a life-ending process and almos immediately getting a new client....such is our world.

Really enjoying warm DRY days of a Saskatchewan summer.

What a Week in our Political Sphere

Two ideologically-based innovations by our federal government. The war on accurate census information appears to have 'blown up' on the Conservatives. I hope they take the same course they took on the short-lived idea of changing the words of 'Oh Canada'.

And the 'review' of employment equity programs. Stockwell Day says the programs are working. So why the review. As a long time employment equity advocate I know that in order to create a more diversified workforce an employer will designate positions as (initially) open to members of designated groups. A single concern expressed about a position not be open to all who apply, should not (in normal circumstances) results in a government-wide review of a program. But I guess if the concern is expressed by a known supporter of an ideologicall--based government, the government will want to be seen to be acting....

Clear Language Hopes

Want to talk about a pet peeve of mine.. don't think I have ever talked about it before here.

The subject is plain language. You know so many documents in our commercial and other sectors are written in complex legalese or some might say 'gobbledygook'. Very long sentences abound. People given these types of documents just don't read them.

Today I was given a handbook and other material at our new financial advisor's office. Full of jargon and technical 'mumbo jumbo'. I likely won't read it for that reason. By not reading it I may not know all my rights in any relationship with the new company.

Many years ago when I was a provincial public servant I was aware of a move to 'clear language' in documents. If I recall correctly a document was written in clear language if it was understandable to someone with a Grade 6 education. It's too bad that even in the 21st century we have not learned to communicate using easy to understand words.

Saturday Morning in saskatchewan

Well it's the end of a week of delivering newspapers so early in the morning. Fortunately the local paper does not publish on Sundays so I don't have to get up so early in the morning.. yea.. a chance to maybe sleep in ( a rare occurrence at any time once you're up past your 50's - at least that's my experience) (:-())

Last night and this weekend there is a wonderful 'retreat'-type action at our local synagogue. We are attending and if last night's experience is any indication the community is going to be considering fundamental changes in the way it conducts its affairs. Good for them.. and we are likely to be part of it.

The long form census controversy....once again our federal government despite its rhetoric about wishing to accommodate needs/wishes of Canadians, is really acting ostrich-like right now.,.. another example of ideology trumping analysis. This is an all too often habit of this government. Only an election can resolve this continuing problem.

We left a lot of family and friends in eastern Ontario when we moved back here in June. Part of understanding is we would make 2/3 visits a year back there. Looking forward to making relevant travel arrangements very soon.

Carrying On

Just carrying on in Saskatchewan. Back to getting up very early in the morning and delivering newspapers... a great way to get exercise and being paid for it ((:-)).. can be a hassle if the weather doesn't co-operate.. like this morning.. but do find ways to cope.

Son-in-law's condition stable. Will be taking him to Saskatoon in several days to meet with specialist.. if time permits may visit a fellow who I worked for some 30 years ago.

Keeping in touch with a number of tax clients in central Canada. Long distance plans are a godsend.

Beginning also to plan visit to central Canada in November to attend a wedding. Will spend several days doing both 'business' stuff and visiting friends and relatives.

Continuing to do the type of things one does after moving into a new city... 'lucked out' in finding a new 'family doctor'... first person on list whose office I phoned was accepting new patients. Our prescriptions have been transferred to a close by pharmacy. Got our new driver's licences yesterday.

Our damaged vehicle is being fixed in early August.

For those who are interested check out my latest musings on a variety of topics on Facebook and Twitter. But stay here for the real 'personal' and 'opinionated' stuff ((:-))

Here We Go Again (Maybe.....)

So there is now renewed federal election speculation because of Senate dealing with budget bill in a way government doesn't like... but isn't this a Senate with many more new government supporters.....

Well if there must be an election so be it...all polls suggest it would be a $300 million exercise resulting in a parliament configured much like the present one. But the voters would have a chance to pass judgement not only on the current government's performance but also on alternatives offered by the opposition.

Oh.. and what's with the 'tanking' of liberal support....is a putsch coming in that party... I think if this continues something will 'break' by Labour Day. I know many folks want the current Liberal leader to fight one election to see how he will do.. but a telling commentary I read somewhere suggests he is perceived to be too 'conservative' on so many issues that he won't attract conservative voters (who already have a party), nor will he attract progressive voters (even some NDP and Green supporters) as his views are too far away from their outlooks.

My own view is the only good thing right now about the federal Liberal MP's is one of their number, I believe it was Gerard Kennedy, was willing some time ago to speculate that to balance our books there may be a need for tax adjustments....there's a politician with 'guts'.

Oh.. and I should 'confess' to be transparent ((:-)). ... in last several federal and provincial elections I have worked as an elections official on voting day.. so if I do that again I'll get a tiny portion of the $300 million election cost....

success!!

Got a part time job starting Monday next.. early morning job but one I have done in the past.

Before I left Regina in 2002 I had delivered newspapers for a couple of hours each early morning.. a way to be paid for walking around in early mornings as a good way to get regular exercise. Welll I'll be doing it again.....starting small but may expand.

Also may decide to drive a school bus.. that would be new.. but as a grandpa who likes grandchildren it could be great fun.....

Just spent first overnight with our 7 year old grandson whose father is quite sick...seemed to go great.. he's a very pleasant young man.

Enjoying cool pleasant weather here in southern Saskatchewan - avoiding heat and humidity of central Canada where we used to live.

well not meant to be +

Well I won't be pursuing the full time job opportunity discussed in yesterday's post. Seems the employer while willing to accommodate short term breaks for family reasons, is not willing to consider say a three month break each year.

I consider running my income tax preparation business as my primary activity in the 'world of work' for the last seven years. The prospective employer was not willing to countenance a 2 1/2 to 3 month gap each year.

Oh well I have a number of part time possibilities I am pursuing.

I see lots of stuff about policing and the G20. I see the Toronto police department is going to have an outside investigator. This is a step in the right direction. I think critics may wish to 'hold their fire' before condemning this step. Let's remember we want the facts about what happened. If something less than a full inquiry gets to the bottom of what happened, that should be sufficient.

I think the progressive elements in our country who in general have bona fide legitimate concerns over police tactics during the G20 should recognize progress when there is progress.

BTW I remain confused about cell service options.. both when I was in Ottawa, and now in Regina. There are so many plans, fees, alternatives etc. out there. How does one make any real comparisons.

Choices One Has to Make in Life Plus

I retired from full time work in March 2001. Except for working 'flat out' for my income tax business in tax season I have only worked at part time jobs.

Earlier today I became a aware of a full time job possibility. I haven't decided to do that yet but am willing to consider it...will likely decide in next day or so.

It would mean a real change in my lifestyle having to work full time again.. it would only last about six months or so as by then I will be preparing for the next tax season.

It would also mean FAR less volunteer activity than I have done the last 9 years.

On other matters I have posted a couple of links on facebook about opinions out there about recent events in Canada like the G8/G20 stuff in toronto. We really do need an independent inquiry on what happened.

Musings

Spent an enjoyable time last evening with our young grandson - the one whose father is so ill. Getting to know him better will help all of us face the future no matter what happens.

His Dad has his good days and bad days. He is set to meet his medical specialist again in Saskatoon on the last Monday in July.

More or less settled here in Saskatchewan. If nothing else turns up I have a part time telephone job commencing on Monday July 12 - not ideal work - but work nevertheless.

Speaking of telephone jobs I have a comment I have often made.. Telemarketing is like the ads for a certain cough medicine... it's a terrible industry in many ways.. but it works. Charities would not use telemarketers to solicit donations if the they were not successful. But apparently they are....

My business is fully registered to operate in Saskatchewan. Now I find out I have to obtain a business licence from my municipality.. that part is ok.. but I then find out it is quite expensive for a business my size. The provincial fee was $55 for three years (it as $60 for five years in Ontario). But the municipal fee is over $100 for the first year and if I read it correctly OVER $200 per year thereafter.. A big OUCH...

Lots of rain all over Saskatchewan. Flooding problems big time in many areas. And some have said Saskatchewan is a dry province.. not in 2010.

143 years old today...advocating for social change

Happy Canada Day to all Canadians. This is a day to celebrate the wonderful country in which we live. We are a vibrant democracy with about 34 million residents who demonstrate the wonders of how a diverse set of folks can mange to live together in generally amicable relationships.

We will be celebrating Canada Day here in Regina by joining with thousands of others in a local park where these types of events occur on a regular basis.

As we celeberate our nation's birthday I cannot help but notice a change in our country the last 30 years. Canadians have a long history of caring for one another. Our social service agencies and volunteer commitments are some of the greatest in the world. Yet there is a 'troubling trend'.

It started in the 1979-80 period with the elections of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. These two 'neo-cons' popularized the idea of a 'less caring society' if not by words, but by their actions. Our public agencies began withdrawing themselves from actions which support a greater sense of equity in our society. Cutbacks were aimed at reducing social services directed to the least fortunate in our societies. We have seen this extended to an inability to meet foreign aid commitments, a refusal to extend women's rights to all corners of our country (and to the world), an ideological approach to crime prevention (never mind the evidence just incarcerate more people), reductions in social assistance benefit payments, etc. etc.

Occasionally one sees exceptions to this general trend.. the Canadian Child Tax Benefit.. is an example.. but they seem few and far between.

As we mark of nation's birthday, I hope progressive-minded Canadians will re-commit ourselves to continue to strive for a more egalitarian country and world based on human rights, equity, equality, and most important a society that 'cares' for its less fortunate.

Last Comments on G8/G20 ofr now + Cell Phones

Yes there should be some type of independent inquiry into events on toronto streets this past weekend.

Heard this morning that Ottawa's City Council approved Lansdowne Park Project. I hope the project's supporters know what they are doing. From when we lived there, I recall significant neighbourhood opposition to the proposed redevelopment.

Lots of articles in media about change in cell phone industry. More competition cannot help but lower prices and improve customer services offered by the Big 3 cell companies. I even saw where one of the Big 3 is working on a plan to compete directly with the new 'upstart' entries in the industry. As cell phone consumers we should win in this situation... but and it may be a big 'but'..will any of the Big 3 allow customers out of 2 and 3 year contracts without penalties.

Time will tell.

Lots One Could Chat About

G8/G20 come and gone.. whew...zillions of things one could chat or even rant about.

Watched bits of whole weekend on media.. seems to be several things happened.

A large group of peaceful protesters made their way along a route on Saturday.

A smaller group of protesters went on other routes

A much smaller group of protesters engaged in 'criminal' behaviour by smashing windows and damaged police cars - you know they call themselves anarchists but I know several philosophical anarchists who would never damage others' property. I am not an anarchist myself but form what I do understand the so-called 'anarchists' this past weekend in Toronto were not anarchists at all - they seemed to be bent on grabbing headlines but all they managed to do was destory property and destory those actions of thousands of peope who really feel the G20 leaders just don't get it in terms of social change.

I don't know if the communique after either G8 or G20 meetings will help alleviate poverty anywhere in the world. The commitment to reduce public sector spending and deficits seems to me to be a commitment NOT to take steps to reduce income and opportunity inequality throughout the world.. such a shame.

I am not a police officer and don't really know the 'ins and outs' of police force 'rules of engagement'. From what I understand some actions on Saturday gave the impression the police were 'allowing' criminal activity to occur. Then on Sunday the police applied maximum police enforcement actions on lots of folks many of whom were guilty of nothing but being at the wrong place at the wrong time. So the police department is in a 'no win' position. People will rightfully criticize them for actions both Saturday and Sunday. I was upset about Saturday's violence and quite disturbed by Sunday's sweeping arrests of many innocent folks.

Our Prime Minister got his summit successes. Achieving consensus among such a disparate group countries is a 'feather in his cap'...but I only wish the consensus meant the world will be a better place...sadly I don't think this is really the case.

The Health System + Earthquake

Our Canadian health system is one of the best in the world. About a year ago I had radial surgery for my arteriovenous malformation. The service I received was exemplary. It reaffirmed my opposition to privatization of our health care system - any more than it is now privatized,.

Part of my procedure a year ago included semi-annual MRI's plus a short session with radiological oncologist (though there is no cancer involved, the radial surgery procedure is done by the cancer specialists) to last for two years after which I would have a final cerebral angiogram.

Well I have had two MRI's so far plus sessions with specialist. Well our relocation has not stopped this procedure. Our Ottawa specialist sent a note to a similar specialist in Regina who asked to see me today. The specialist confirmed the procedure would be the same in our new location, I was impressed with the thoroughness of the specialists in both communities.

Readers of my profile on Facebook and my tweets on Twitter know that I was very directly affected by the earthquake that occurred in central Canada today It isn't often you are talking on the phone to a business client who suddenly says they have to end the call as the building is 'shaking'. That's what happened today. I have never been so 'close' to a natural event like this in my life. The person I spoke with emailed me about an hour later to say all was ok but it had been a frightening experience.

Changes in My Blog + Important Stuff

In order to change email address I am using in my blog I have changed the URL of this blog. It is now www.saskdga.blogspot.com.

I'll put this note on the blog attached to my former email.

I am unsure but I think this is all tied in to the fact I created the blog with a google account that used a 'then' valid email address. With our relocation I could no longer use the former email address.

I think I indicated I was starting a job search earlier this week.. well I have a couple of good leads on some work which I hope would start in eary July.

Tuesday Comments

Well it's now Tuesday morning here in Regina Sask. I wonder how much rain will come today. ANd this is a province where it never rains.. I guess the folks in southwestern Saskatchewan have had more than their share of rains.

This past Saturday did a quick trip to Saskatoon to pick up my son-in-law at the hospital and bring him back home. Ride was uneventful.

However he had to spend a night at the hospital to ensure some broken stitches did not mean he would continue to lose lots of blood. He's home now taking it easy.

Looking forward to continuing to cheer on my grandchildren in their various activities.

Beginning to start up my income tax preparation service in my new location. Will get more active as time goes on.

Also yesterday started search for part time work. Had a wonderful insightful interview with a recruiter yesterday. She made several serious changes to my existing resume to reflect 21st century human resource attitudes. I hope these changes will make my job search somewhat easier.

Father's Day Musings

Well it's 'father's day' which I won't be marking. I am a father and have had a father. But like mother's day five or six weeks ago I find the celebration of both days quite 'corny'. We should respect our mothers and fathers every day of the year. One can argue the second Sunday in May and the third Sunday in June are creations of the greeting card, floral, and chocolate industries.

Had a wonderful experience yesterday. Taking son-in-law from hospital in Saskatoon to home in Regina.

Also am helping our daughter in search for more appropriate accommodation here in town.

So we are in the weekend before the G8/G20. Will see how it unfolds. I heard one person (no idea where) suggest we should do away with in person type leader summits if they have to be so expensive. Also isn't it the case that mosts decisions coming out of these types of things are confirmations of agreements already arrived at?

Electronic communications amongst the G8/G20 leaders would reduce all the concerns about costs.

I am starting a new short term project tomorrow - a search for a part time job.

Also readers of this blog... while I will still be linking this blog to facebook I think I will be changing my business and personal emails one again. My two gmail.com addresses were for transition purposes. I am not a fan of how gmail organizes messages into 'conversations' rather than threads and will be resuiming my traditional email software useage in next day or so.

happenings - First full day in new city + other

Well I guess the highlight of the past 24 hours was watching 'slugger' play ball last evening. Our 7 year old grandson - the one whose dad is unwell - plays baseball here in Regina. He is one of the team's better hitters. Fielding..well that's another issue - I remember years ago when I coached softball that the largest problem for fielders is to 'PAY ATTENTION'.

Hoping to hear of arrival of furniture soon...............

Well there is a furore over comments by a NDP MP over the Middle East. The Middle East is a 'hot potato' no matter what position one takes. I have previously said I support a two state solution with equal access to all religious sites; and end to Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands (i.e, West Bank), internationalization of Jerusalem, compensation (in negotiated form) for all persons who are refugees, ending incitement on both sides etc. etc. Any alterations in borders can occur with the agreement of both parties.

What really is needed is both sides to recognize the legitimacy of the other's narrative. Regrettably those who tend to speak on this issue demonstrate a lack of recognition.

I also believe the vast majority of residents in Israel and Palestine do wish for a real peace. Only a small minority continue to strive for 'victory'.

Day Five is Done - Wrap Up - Good News on Another Front

Reached our destination yesterday. Actually reached it twice as you shall see.

Entered Saskatchewan early yesterday morning.. felt good to be driving in province where we lived for over 3 decades and have made the decision to return.

Drove right through Regina as we decided to make quick trip to Saskatoon to see our son-in-law. Are we ever glad we did....

He appeared in much better condition than we have seen in a long time. He looked vibrant and sounded so. He said his pain was less than before. The attending staff said his condition was improving. They indicated they were considering moving him from the 'observation' part of his ward to a regular hospital bed.

There seemed to be a possibility that he could even return home in a few days...quite uncertain for now.. but it was great to hear that....

Overnighted back in Regina and today start a mulititude of 'settling' in tasks... mind you biggest job won't occur until our furniture arrives... in next day or so.

Saw daughter, her boyfriend, and 3 grandsons last evening.. great to see them all...

Staying with a couple of long-time friends.. we have known for between 30 and 40 years - in fact he is friend we have known the longest of all people in Saskatchewan. Met him at a University of Saskatchewan class in the fall of 1969.

Oh and BTW, we saw another deer on the roadway... I guess this trip as been for a real 'dear' purpose ((:-))

Day Four Is Done

Well finally drove out of Ontario today... we have driven between eastern Ontario and Saskatchewan several times over the years. Ontario is a vast province..so much to traverse the entire province.

Had a short surprise today (a repeat of one we had on day one.. sorry I forgot to mention it)...we saw a deer by the side of the road. So far then two deer, one bear, and one boat trailer incident ((:-)).

Got as far as Brandon Manitoba. Tomorrow arrive back 'home' in the great province of Saskatchewan. Plans are to visit son-in-law at hospital during course of the day.

Our trip is not only thing underway in world ((:-)). Been following some of the FIFA World Cup scores. Don't have a strong team preference... but for no apparent reason I think I'll cheer for Switzerland.

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Day Three is Done

Not too interesting day but we did get to see the beauty of the shoreline of Ontario's Lake Superior - by far the largest of the Great Lakes in North America. Did have one surprise today... this morning we slowed down the car suddenly as a black bear was standing by edge of road. One we stopped the bear scampered across the road and into the bush.

We travelled over 700 kilometres (450 miles for US readers) ending the day on the west side of Lake Superior at Thunder Bay.

We keep getting reports on how our son-in-law is doing. We remain hopeful but know he is not 'out of the woods yet'. We have decided to make a detour on our way into Regina - our final destination. Monday morning we will drive from wherever we stay Sunday night to Saskatoon where our son-in-law remains in hospital. We've heard it may be many days until he comes home from the hospital.

Friday, June 11, 2010

Day Two is Done

Well the second day of our trip saw us pass trees, trees, and more trees. But as those who see this blog through its link on facebook or read my status on facebook and twitter know we had an unforseen 'hiccup' in our progress.

Had stopped for coffee this morning at a certain oft frequented place (named after a former hockey player) and just about finished coffee when I noticed a guy closely examining our car. Went out there and found he had accidentally scraped our car with a boat and its trailer. We pleasantly exchanged information about each other - he freely admitted he was responsible.

This 'hiccup' happened in Sudbury.. Found out that community has a unique (at least I did not know it before) system for reporting MV accidents. They have an office (that says it is not part of the police department) that plays the role of a police department in receiving MV accident reports. The staff there were quite pleasant and I imagine if an upset person showed up there, I think the staff would rapidly put them at ease.

Anyways after a two hour delay we motored on...ended up stopping today in Sault Ste Marie - at the easternmost end of Lake Superior.

After yesterday's blog we heard from a friend of our son-in-law. He had surgery yesterday with both good and some worrisome results.... but I remain cautiously optimistic.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Day One is Done

Well an relatively uneventful first day of our travels. Headed out west on Transcanada Highway No. 17 by middle of the afternoon. Most common site along the road is trees.. and trees.. and you now something... more trees. We've taken this road before and we know that trees are always nearby in this part of Canada.

I've heard that trees, rocks and rivers are the dominant landmarks in much of Canada. This is so true of what we saw today and will be true for the next few days.

We got as far as North Bay Ontario.

Anxiously awaiting word from Saskatoon over our son-in-law's surgery...

Day One of Our Journey

It's about a quarter after 9 in the morning. We have 4 people here to load our stuff in a huge moving truck.. told that the truck when full may have up to 9 loads.

Lead driver wants us to think about earlier delivery at destination than originally planned... unsure if we will agree to that....

It's cloudy today in Ottawa. It's the end of a 7 1/2 year residency in the National Capital Area. What an exciting time to spend in this area. In 7 1/2 years so much of my life has changed. Things occurred here and in Saskatchewan that have profoundly affected my life and that of those closest to me.

We lost a daughter during our stay. Our grandsons quadrupled in number.

I began to know what health challenges can arise all of a sudden. One can appreciate the marvels of PUBLIC health care in Canada when one needs to use it. Beginning in 2003 I was diagnosed with a series of 'aging' conditions... but decided very early to not be upset about them....after all there really is no point in being upset at things you cannot change.

I 'changed' in the 7 1/2 years. Had some unique relationships which I will never forget. Befriended a young woman (now deceased) who had multiple complex issues but never lost her sunny disposition.

I was an active volunteer 'visiting' with folks with various 'challenges' in their lives. Always a challenge in these situations between wanting to 'change the world' and 'accepting things as they are'...sometimes got 'into trouble' being too much of a 'advocate' but usually was welcomed into these situations and life situations.

What started out as a temporary job 7 years ago led to the creation of an income tax preparation business which has now operated for 7 years and provides service to over 300 folks. This business will continue in Saskatchewan.

In a few hours we begin the journey... stay tuned for periodic /regular progress updates.

The Journey begins (sort of)

Well bright and early this morning we are up and 'at it'. In a little while a friendly group of people show up who we refer to loosely as 'the packers'. Our residence is a 'mess' and will be for the next day and a half... however we are quite used to it having moved lots of times in past four decades.

A few random comments:

Merger of two political parties on the centre left in Canada... are they serious? I don't really know... maybe a post-election coalition makes more sense in the short term. But if it takes a merger to return Canada's federal politics to a more 'reasonable'attitude on social policy, foreign aid, justice, economic development, then 'so be it'.

We are eagerly awaiting news out of Saskatoon .. likely to come tomorrow or Friday. Many readers of this blog know we have a son-in-law battling cancer. Tomorrow he has surgery in Saskatoon...we are cautiously optimistic.

Journey blogging starts tomorrow.

Good Byes Continue

Had nice visit to Kingston today. Said my goodbyes to members of the Reform Jewish Synagogue in Kingston. Received nice hopes of best wishes. Also spent some time with in-laws and with a long time client who has decided to change his bookkeeper/tax preparer because of my pending relocation.

And speaking of relocation... I think I will try to blog every day of our trip.. so stay tuned.

Friday Musings

I see the political elites in both NDP and Libs are against coalition politics before an election. Egos can be a problem when thinking 'outside the box'....

Unlike our Prime Minister I don't believe coalitions are only for winners and not for 'losers'. Coalitions are arrangements between politial partners to govern a polity according to agreed upon policies/arrangements.

We are concluding our last full week in eastern Ontario tomorrow with a trip to Kingston for a Shabbat morning service and time with my inlaws.

Two nights ago I attended my last condominium board meeting. Those of you who live in condominiums should consider at some time participating in your board. It is a wonderful way of finding out, in detail, what is happening in your condo. Condo board members are a small group of extremely dedicated individuals. Condominium owners/residents need to be thankful that this small group of people continue tirelessly to work on their behalf.

"Coalition Chatter"

My own view is the 'left of centre' political elements in this country may have to do what the right of centre did a few years ago. If Libs; NDP; and to a lesser extent the Greens and BQ stay separate parties, our country will be under an increasingly conservative government.

But I suspect any formal union is some time away. I think current leadership egos would prevent any real progress on some type of interparty agreement at least NOT until after next federal election.

Happenings

As many know we are relocating to Saskatchewan in a few weeks. This morning said 'good bye' to many folks at our synagogue here in Ottawa. Had expected some mention of our departure but was surprised to receive annual volunteer award. Quite touched at being recognized for our volunteer work in our synagogue.

I have mentioned to more than one person, that the Rabbi at Ottawa's Reform Jewish synagogue is in many ways a 'coach' as well as 'teacher'. He is very good at enabling volunteers. Not all professional staff in non-government organizations are good at doing this. But the professional staff at Temple Israel in Ottawa are different.

Today was one of a series of 'farewell' type events we are having the past few weeks into early June. Even though we have been in eastern Ontario for only 7 1/2 years we have established wonderful relationships. I have ongoing relationships with over 300 people as a result of my seasonal income tax preparation business. We have relationships with many folks both in synagogues in Ottawa and Kingston.

The wonderful thing about living in the 21st century is the ease with which one can maintain relationships despite vast geographical distances. Almost all the relationships I have discussed in this post will continue after our relocation.

Long Weekend Musings

Isn't it nice there is almost universal agreement respecting the Auditor General's request for MP's to let her office view their expenses. My sense is most MP's are feeling the heat during their recent break and a way will be found to let her office view their expensees.

It's a bit unfortunate that some more 'right wing' folks in our society will use this to again 'whip' up hysteria about politicians' expenses. A more 'savvy' attitude by MP's when the request was made would have saved everyone a lot of grief.

Social media (or social networking) continues to increase it impact on our society. Retweeted an article saying Twitter may have saved lives in the turmoil in Bangkok.

I agree with those who have decried the individuals responsible for the RBC Bank in Ottawa. What an effective way to put the breaks on real social change.

Getting closer to major relocation in early June. Had enjoyable visit with inlaws yesterday...

Coalitions and Electoral Reform

We need electoral reform in Canada!! People are cynical about politics and politicians. Why is our turnout so low in elections? More and more people just don't care!!

We need to explore coalition governing and politics in Canada. We need to not be afraid of compromising at least some long-held principles.

Our political system is broke. An ideological-based party seems 'entrenched' in power with only 30-35% of the popular vote. It is really unfair.

So-called progressive Canadians need to work together to restore the Canadian political system. So-called conservative Canadians have shown it can be done.

I am coming of the view we need Liberals and New Democrats to get over years of hostility to each other. Otherwise we are 'doomed' to more years of what are called 'George Bush lite' policies of our current federal government.

HST

Attended a seminar on the coming HST in Ontario yesterday. Had one question to find answer out and got it quite easily. I needed to know the answer, as I am relocating to a province that doesn't have a HST and sounds like it is in no hurry to get one. I run a small income tax preparation business and have clients in several provinces.

My new understanding is as a GST registrant, I will automatically be a HST registrant. I will have to collect HST if a client resides in (as of July 1, 2010) BC, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. If a client lives in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, or Prince Edward Island, or the territories I have to collect GST only.

My understanding is that the type of service I provide is not a taxable (provincially) service in the non-HST jurisdictions and even if it is, I am not obliged to collect it. Of course that could change if other provinces sign on to an HST type agreement with the federal government.

Elsewhere I have indicated my own views on the HST - a 'necessary evil' whose regressive impact needs to be 'cushioned' by credits/grants paid to low and moderate income earning individuals/families. I am also alarmed at the anti-tax coalition against the HST. I find the anti-tax coalitions are composed of unholy alliances made up of what are frankly 'opportunists'.

Bank Tax

See media full of Canadian government Cabinet Ministers 'globetrotting' around the world campaigning against a bank tax to cover future bailouts...

Let's see...our government opposed a bank tax because our banks did relatively well during the recession. Hmmmm...as if doing well means one should not take steps to protect a whole industry/economy to ensure problems don't arise again.

Seems this is a case where our government is once against pitting folks against each other. The 'folks against each other' are now the banks in Canada and elsewhere. In this age of globalization what affects one financial sector seems to affect all financial sectors worldwide. Should all banks participate in providing necessary resources to help bail out any future difficulties? Or should governments, like ours, continue to appeal to nationalistic sentiments suggesting that 'our" banks shouldn't be asked to help out other banks?...

Of course bank profits have been rising rapidly in recent months. My own particular bank made $1.3 billion in just 90 days some time ago.. they are so so hard done by!!

"us against them" seems to be a mantra of the current federal government.

Equity and Diversity

I am writing this while participating in my last meeting of the City of Ottawa's Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee. This is group of up to 15 residents of Ottawa who meet monthly to 'advance' the city's commitment to equity and diversity. They are a sincere group of folks who really do want to make an impact.

Do they? If one is looking for concrete results sometimes one can wonder. But clearly from anecdotal if not 'scientifically proven' experience the committee has had some real success since its inception about a decade ago.

Varia

Well still working on tax returns.. not nearly as hectic as during tax season but still few to do...why do some clients wait until after tax season...many do so willingly so it's less hectic; others do so as they don't owe money; and others.. well just procrastinate ((:-)). But my clients are the 'lifeblood' of my business so who am I to complain ((:-)).

Spent a week in Saskatchewan a few days ago. Saw our family. Grandsons are growing...newest one (4 months old) contributed to 2 sleepless nights for my wife and me. But he's loads of fun...

Glad our federal politicians came to an agreement on document disclosure. Gee they CAN work together when they want to...but only because no one of them wants an election...which is becoming long overdue in my view....

Speaking of not wanting something I see most MP's don't want Auditor General reviewing their expenses.. have they something to hide.....

As many of you know we are returning to Saskatchewan next month.. tomorrow we get to say 'best wishes' to lots of friends and customers....

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Today and tomorrow have an opportunity to cheer on our 7 year old grandson (the one whose father is sick) at a ball practice and game (weather permitting). It will be great to see him involved in this type of activity.

Our 12 year old grandson (when he is not 'hanging out' with friends) tells me his major sporting interest is playing football. As we are going to be much closer to him we may be able to make his interest a reality.

Oh and we intend to take him to a Riders game... GO RIDERS GO

Saw some old friends yesterday which was quite nice.....visiting a very dear friend later on today.

Really enjoying current trip now... housing arrangements for after our move are in place....

Saskatchewan Goings On

In middle of week long visit to Saskatchewan. Looking forward to relocation here in June.. Yes if you haven't guessed it from earlier posts we are returning to this province in middle of June. We spent 33 years in Saskatchewan (31 in Regina) and it has become 'home' to us.. While we grew up in eastern Ontario, the bulk of our 'lives' have been in Saskatchewan.

My wife and I first talked about moving back to Saskatchewan last summer when we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in both Regina and Ottawa. But a severe health challenge affecting the caregiver of our second grandson made us move up our move back. Our families in eastern Ontario first expressed serious concern over such a move.. but health crisis for our son-in-law makes them fully understand why we have moved this relocation forward by several years.

We have seen our son-in-law twice so far. He is trying to keep a good face but is in a high level of pain and knows he is quite sick. Apparently there is a considerable family history of this condition.

We hope any of you who believe in any supreme power will offer your requests for healing for Gerry Laliberte, 46 years old, fighting colon cancer (3rd stage).

Thank you very much for reading this post and any prayers you say for our son-in-law.

Various Stuff

Writing this post from Calgary airport en route for visit to family and friends in Saskatchewan. A good 'post tax season' get away even though not everything is done... But pressure time is over at least for now.

Still have some responsibilities in NGO's in Ottawa. Dealt with one of them by phone and email from here.

Very happy at upbeat mood of son-in-law with whom I spoke a day or so ago.

Others are commenting on current happenings in Parliament. From where I sit, the Speaker's ruling on detainee documents was a good one. Parliamentarians of all stripes must co-operate to ensure MPs have access.

I hear folks still venting about HST. Do those who vent have an alternative to ensure public agency has resources to carry on all the worthwhile public programs and services? Consumption taxes like HST are regressive but low income earner tax credits/rebates lessen impact. One can argue about levels of credits/rebates but the reality is consumption taxes are here to stay.

winding down and going forward

Slowly but surely unwinding from income tax season... lots of loose ends to clean up ..but easily manageable in next little while.

Pleasant job in days ahead.. get to visit our daughter and grandsons in Saskatchewan.. always an important part of one's life. Family is important.

Some readers here may know we are relocating from current residence in Canada's capital back to Saskatchewan to be closer to family. We've heard of lots of people moving to be closer to children and grandchildren. Never really thought we would be doing same.. but so is life.

Have advised income tax clients this is 'in the works'.. hope to retain most of them next year - the wonders of email/scan/fax/PDF makes life so much more convenien these days.

It's Over (Sort of)

April 30, 2010 has come and gone. Glad that the high intensity workload of income tax preparation season has completed. Still have a number of files to clean up or should I say clear up. Once again the 300+ folks have shown wonderful support for my income tax preparation business.

But in this world and this life things keep moving along...just three days to wind stuff up (at least partly wind stuff up) from tax season and then off to another 'adventure' in our lives. More to come later

Just Shocking

Saw recent article in media regarding federal government's treatment of Abousfian Abdelrazik. It's just terrible this guy cannot work as he is on some list. Our government apparently refuses to help him get off the list.

He is a Canadian cleared of all terrorist ties by our security agencies but because of US actions (during Bush years) he is on a no-fly list.... and his government (that is our government) won't help him.

A terrible situation....

As the Season Unfolds

Preoccupied with income tax preparation activities the last week (which is why I have quiet here and likely will be the next few weeks). Pace of work seems similar to previous years despite mobility challenges...the ankle stuff. It is also progressing nicely.

Physiotherapist has suggeseted I may be driving again in a week or so. It won't come soon enough.

Having a wide variety of clients means a wide variety of situations...learning new things every day in this business.

Many many clients quite understanding of plans to relocate business later on this year.

When Will Our Politics Mature

Heard news reports from Liberal 'thinkfest' in Montreal suggesting maybe.. just maybe... someone will have the political 'skill' and 'strength' to talk about ways to ensure our public sector has the capacity to make needed investments in Canada. We need to have leaders that are willing to talk about public finances and initiate conversations with our electorate about tax adjustments.

But anyone who suggests that is 'shouted' down by the anti-tax lobby in Canada. This lobby has been around for about 20-30 years and their sole purpose in life is to weaken the public sector's ability to make significant investments in social housing, education, welfare, income redistribution etc. etc.

You know about a year and a half ago we had a federal election in Canada. The advocates of some type of tax on carbon were 'creamed' by the voters. But that idea seems to have been good public policy. Yet the anti-tax crowd.. now exemplified by our current federal government went on a savage attack agains the idea.

As a result political leaders in Canada are 'chicken' about taxes and immature to boot. The party that initiates such a discussion in a serious way in this country will have my support whenever the next election comes.

Thursday Morning Musings

Ankle continues to heal nicely. Seeing physiotherapist once a week and getting exercises to strengthen ankle area...using a 'walking cast'... I hope by end of month to be ready to stop using it.. but only time will tell.

The Ann Coulter affair..true it looks bad when the controversy prevented her organizers from allowing her speaking engagement to proceed. In a free democracy it is always better to hear what 'crazy' folks have to say even if one disagrees with them.... but in our democracy we do have laws prohibiting incitement against identifiable groups.

The official from the University of Ottawa who sent the cautionary note to Ms. Coulter was probably trying to help the situation but may have inadvertently heightened the controversy.

Also if media reports are correct the meeting organizers tried to 'stack' meeting with her supporters.

Anyways she speaks in Calgary tonite and presumably anything interesting that is said will be widely reported. She does say things that are uncomfortable and unpleasant to hear. Her alleged joke about ways for Muslims to travel was uncalled for and worthy of public criticism. Her post 911 comments were very objectionable.

Otherwise keeping busy with my tax preparation business...will be posting fewere times until end of April.

A Saturday Morning Musing

Sitting at a public library 2 hours away from 'home base'... mixing business with personal stuff today...

Just saw tweet about criticism by some folks of pro gay and lesbian rights in context of new Human Rights Museum being built in Winnipeg... you know some people just don't get it....in this, the 21st century in Canada.. how can any thinking Canadian be upset at promotion of rights of minorities.

I also have difficult with 'face covering' concerns in Quebec (and other places).. we should be celebrating cultural differences in our great country.

It's Problematic Big Time

So our federal government is working to support maternal and child health in developing countries....and it reluctantly agreeds to include 'family planning'.. oh how good of them.

A few days ago it announced it would not support family planning. At least over the last few days they realized how out of touch with reality they were.

But they still have trouble with a woman's right to choose. We have enshrined that right in our country.. but our government refuses to sanction it in other countries. As is happening more and more often their 'base' is bringing out old ideological positions to argue for once again.

Our Prime Minister took a good position some time ago that the issue of same sex marriage was no longer worthy of public discourse. But now his government seems to want to revive the controversy over pregnancy termination. All studies I have seen say real economic development occurs in those countries of the world where women control their bodies and their destinies. Women everywhere must have access to safe ways to go through a pregnancy or if they wish to safely and legally terminate a pregnancy.

Anything less makes our world less equitable to all....

Moving Right Along

Saw surgeon on Monday who said I CAN put weight on foot... Gee it feels good!!!!

This allows me to do things like prepare my own meals in our apartment. It's great not ot have to rely on my caregiver/life partner for all meals.. HOpe to get rid of walker this weekend.. and maybe a week later to stop needing a 'walking cast'. Physiotherapist reminded me other day to 'take it easy' but to work at it...she gave me a few exercise and tips to help out recovery.

Tax preparation business 'clicking along'. Meeting a number of new very interesting clients.

Have to run....

Musing Today

It's been a few days...mixing it up with three things in my life... first is preparation of income tax returns...lots of work to do even if I am less 'ambulatory' than usual. So many of my clients are quite accommodating in bringing their tax papers to me.

Unsure if I am progessing as fast as I could but seem to be turing around a lot of customer returns.

The other thing in my life is beginning to disengage from various voluntary activities in the Ottawa area. As we approach a major relocation in June, this will become an increasing part of my days. We've been in Ottawa a little over 7 years but have established so many relationships. (We are considering seriously a going away social to say 'good bye' to many of our good friends).

And there is the ankle.. oh the ankle.. still avoiding putting any weight on it... see surgeon next Monday ... I hope things will change but am unsure.

Musings on Federal Budget

Lots of topics to chat about here. I like idea of second year of stimulus funding. I also like changes to have banks only hold on to cheques for 4 days; and to allow consumers access to first $100 within 24 hours. Having just heard banks reporting record profits (again) I am sure this move won't hurt banks and will help consumers.

I was disappointed in announced cutbacks to foreign aid.

The 'rigidity' of restraint measures will not help Canadians. So many folks seem to think the providers of public service are 'running amok'. As one who used to be a public servant I know public sector employees are just as conscientious about spending money as are employees in the private sector. We are all taxpayers so we all benefit by prudent public sector spending. But I really have issues with those in our media (especially radio talk show hosts) who blame all our ills on 'public sector' greed.

There were 'glimmers' of hope in political reaction to yesterday's budget. I saw some indication of a willingness to compromise on some issues...I wonder if our federal government will show some flexibility on some contentious issues. Who knows, if they did, we may get some real co-operation amongst the federal political parties. Wouldn't that be nice!

Mid week Musings

Getting used to air cast on my ankle...nice to be able to take it off once in a while. Also a friend of our is to loan us a bench to let me sit in the tub and have a proper bath/shower which I have been unable to do so far...sponge baths just aren't the same ((:-))

Tax preparation season is well under way. The ankle is presenting some challenges but we seem to be coping. My caregiver/life partner/wife is so accommodating in driving me around.

Awaiting with 'baited breath' the resumption of our federal Parliament. Somehow I have this 'feeling' we will quickly see real attempts at interparty co-operation (oh how naive can I be at sometimes), or a return of hyperpartisan politics. If the latter occurs, my only consistent and continuing reaction will be... bring the election on!!

March Musings

A few topics today.

Had great success putting current condominium on market...have conditional sale in less than 3 days. The journey of 2010 continues.

Enjoyed watching Olympics but GLAD they're over. Congratulations to Canada's athletes on a good performance at these games.

A little concerned at the predominance of one sport. Seems like most of the Canadian media were disproportionately concerned over results in one event. Men's hockey is an important sport in Canada but one wonders why it monopolizes coverage. I fear we may have gone into a national 'funk' if the men's team had lost yesterday. But one has to always remember it is ONLY A GAME.

Also meet with surgeon today about the healing of my ankle. Hope to make progress with newer less bothersome cast.

A New Journey

Life's a continuous journey with significant turns at various times. One frequently ponders changes and sometimes second guesses them after they occur. When I look back at my 60 some years I can identifty several turning points that were significant (and life changing).

Well 2010 will see another turn in our live stories. It will take several months for this turn to fully occur.

But we started our turn last night. We have put our condominium on the market here in Ottawa. We have been advised the state of our local real estate market is that it will sell relatively quickly.

Here We Go Again (Maybe)

Just casually watching Olympics reviews and news this morning and saw reference to Maxime Bernier and climate change. A government back bencher making remarks questioning the validity of widely accepted scientific opinion that our world is facing the challenge of climate change.

Maxime Bernie is not an ordinary government back bencher. He's a former cabinet minister who is rumoured in some quarters to be heading back to the ministry some day soon.

I fear that our federal governing party still has climate change deniers in its midst. It seems that party continues to have active members who question the existence of climate change. I can only hope that when the election finally comes our ratonal electorate will rise up and 'spank' those who just don't get it on climate change.

Putting Things into Perspective

Was 'complaining' on facebook about my ankle.. Someone told me to be thankful as it could be worse and some folks have it worse.

I was most appreciative of that reminder. Too often all of us think we have it bad. We do all have challenges but must understand others' may have more significant and long term challenges.

A very refreshing 'slap on the head' by a young man.

Relationships - Keys to Our Lives

Almost finished my first full week of wearing cast as my ankle heals. Was reminded that after my six week 'cast' period there will be a period of rehabilitation. Strongly hope it won't interfere too much in April which is the culmination of each year's tax preparation seasion.

I do volunteer driving for a local social service agency. I also drive a group of seniors to a local Jewish community centre social activity. This week I have received moving emails and greeting cards from people in both groups. Their words of encouragement have been moving to say the least.

I am currently co-ordinating an outreach/conversion class at a Ottawa synagogue. Earlier this week a pot of plants arrived with a card from the 'class'. A totally unexpected surprise.

I was to be in Kingston today leading a local synagogue service. It was cancelled (the synagogue is quite small) with a request that members send me get well wishes.. and within minutes of being notified, several of them emailed me with heartwarming messages.

Being laid up in tax preparation season is problematic in a significant sense. But my clients have reacted quite positively to my suggested alternatives to my going to their place to pick up tax papers. Many have agreed to wait until after I have my cast off. Other have agreed to accommdate me in other ways.

Personal Experience with Public Health Care System

This past Saturday I slipped on some ice in a parking lot near my home. Passersby immediately came to my assistance. I was able to get into a local store and the people there removed my boot and saw a large swelling on my right foot. They called an ambulance and when they arrived, the emergency medical people said I should go the hospital and they thought there were some breaks and possible dislocation.

Shortly after arrrival at Ottawa's Montfort Hospital I was treated at a 'fast track' area to determine if I did not have to stay very long. But this changed quickly as xrays showed a dislocation and three breaks in bones in my right ankle. I was admitted to the hospital. Prior to going to my room though, they did a wonderfully painless short procedure to relocate my ankle bone. As it would hurt tremendously they gave me what I can call an instantaneous anesthetic. I recall lights moving and thought I kept chatting (as is my wont) but then realized the bone was no longer swelling (I had been asleep for maybe 30 seconds)

After admission I was told surgery would likely occur on Sunday. Well after several false expectations I was told on late Sunday it was postponed to Monday. About 2:00 PM on Monday I had the surgery. It went well...was 'joking around a bit' with the surgeon, aneasthetist (sp?), recovery room staff etc. etc. One staff person kidded me about giving out my PIN when I was in the recovery room but still 'out of it' ((:-))

The hospital sent me home yesterday. I am now using a two wheel waker to get around our residence. My wife and best friend is pushing me in a small 'wheelchair' device when going to and from our car.

Here's my POINT. This experience at the hospital reinforced my view of our Canadian Health Care system. Is it the BEST we have here in Canada. The staff I dealt with were a marvellous group of men and women. They try to meet all various personal needs of patients. They are also very patient with patient idiosyncracies (and yes I have some too).

They have an always present happy disposition.

I have now even less patience with those private health care advocates. We do have mixed health care system when looking at the overall system.. but the public part is alive and well. May it flourish forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
